if there's one thing i think isn't great about the neolithic era, it's how random it is. if i don't find anything in turn 1 or 2, or it's the +5 food one? might as well restart if I'm hoping to play the civilizations the AI likes to pick. i don't know what the fix is but if you're not hitting one of those stars by turn 6, you're probably not going to get any of the 'in demand' civs. you've basically got half a dozen turns to hit a star and the placements are random, combine that with the knowledge star versus the other two...

I'm not sure which of these does this, but either increasing the game length (I'm on the 450 turn one) or the difficulty (I'm on civ atm, but it was the same at one step down) slows down the neolithic era a lot: the food for a new unit moves to 30, and the requirements for each star are increased. Earning your legacy trait is still at 10 science though. I don't always get first pick against 5 opponents, but usually I'm 1-2. I think it basically smooths out a lot of the randomness of a "better" start, though that is still a thing for sure.

Also if you get the chance you should totally bully someone by burning their outposts. You get 40 food and they'll often spend time running over to fight you, so you can usually get a army advantage and push them super behind you letting you beat them up again in the next era.

I just played with 9 AIs on 6 continents, a bunch of islands, on a circumventable large sized map. I was pretty aggressive mid game in grabbing islands that had resources on them, got lucky in that I never really got invaded, and then pushed out into the world without facing any meaningful resistance. It's too bad, because I really want a nail biting war in the industrial or later age, particularly where I get to use air, naval, and land power.

I should probably just do a pangaea next. I should boost up the difficulty too, but what's generally the best way to try to get a game where the AI poses a threat at the end, even if you've started reaching runaway production?

i like to absorb independents early in the game, it's sooooo cheap compared to founding a city. with the assimilation perk, absorbing an independent as your fourth city costs something like 15% as much as establishing your own.

it shocks me how nice this game can look, while still being very readable. it looks AT LEAST as good as civ 6, but i always know what kind of tile i'm walking into without even having to hover over it. and, most importantly, the camera perspective doesn't do weird relative math so when you click somewhere, you're clicking where you're pointing rather than ????. i misclick every other turn in civ 6; i've probably misclicked like twice in this game.

I really really don't know why they went away from the resource system in the other Endless games. Units/buildings would then cost 50 copper or whatever, as opposed to a binary system where you can either make it, or you can't. It also still encourages you to fight over and trade resources, since having only one or two sources of Oil will get outproduced by a civ with four or five sources.

This is one of my biggest disappointments. I really wanted to see the accumulative resources in humankind. What a botched opportunity.

their big thing is being able to build the haven and then a cothon if you choose carthage next. it's not amazing, but it's a five quarters worth of fids for only two quarters worth of stability cost.

Yeah, I wouldn't say the Phoenicians are really special outside of abusing the ability to stack harbors, Carthage is a lot better because like Khmer it stacks food + production. As for the boats and exploration, I don't play with New World, it's too abusable by you and I don't think it adds anything enjoyable in an AI game. Naval warfare itself is a massive mess. If you're escorting melee units and get into a fight....they will be on the battlefield and get 1 shot by the enemy navy wasting your invasion, so you basically have to have massive naval superiority to screen all directions and protect your horrifically vulnerable transport ships and also be able to react before the AI can move in for the kill because first turn advantage is insane in a fight without terrain.

I'm inclined to agree about the new world. I think that this current game will be my last new world game for quite a while, the AI just has no idea how boats work, or how to get to other continents effectively. The Magenta Player/Seat 3 free relations bug is the only thing that seems to get any of the AI players elsewhere.

:tinfoil: <(Maybe the developers made Magenta cheat this way on purpose to make a contrast color the "final boss" under the assumption that most players would pick Blue)

I've found I don't need overwhelming naval superiority for this reason--the AI isn't smart enough to stop my units with boats. But the hypothetical "needing boats to successfully invade" is something I actually support and would like more of, as, yes, Naval invasions are indeed a nightmare to succeed at.

Saw this update yesterday on Steam:

----

What’s next?

So, here’s a brief look at our plans for the near and not-so-near future:

Upcoming patches

Our team has been hard at work investigating and fixing bugs since launch (and we want to thank all of you who took the time to report issues you encountered), and we are going to deliver at least two patches to address various problems,

The first of these patches is already available as a beta test on an optional Steam branch, and we will release it officially very soon. For those of you who prefer to stay on the latest official stable version, and our players on other storefronts, here’s a small sample of what you can look forward to:
Broadened generation conditions of Oil and Uranium deposits to reduce the risk of not enough deposits of either spawning
Fixed GamePass players being unable to use multiplayer with the error message "You were forcibly disconnected from the game"
Fixed “Stuck on tenet screen if all tenets are taken” bug
Fixed several causes of turns not processing and getting stuck
Improved AI behavior and performance

We’re already hard at work on the patch after the next one as well, but that one will take a little longer to be finished and released. In addition to more bug fixes, we want this patch to improve multiplayer and include a balance pass on several aspects of the game, such as cultures.

Map Making, Modding Tools, and Day 1 Mod

We’ve talked about our intentions for the modding capabilities of Humankind before, and while the scope of our plans has not changed, we cannot deny that the timing did not work out as we had planned.

We’re still working on the modding tools and the Day 1 mod, though we are focusing on the modding tools first to put a first version of these tools into your hands as soon as possible to empower you to create your own mods. This initial release will have more limited capabilities than what we would like to achieve, but we hope to be able to deliver this together with one of the upcoming patches.

In the meantime, the map editor is already available to you, and a number of bugfixes and improvements are coming to it in the next patch. And while you may be waiting for the modding tools to start your own dream project, this is a great time to get your feet wet in map making, as just yesterday we started a Map Making Contest with some amazing prizes! We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Other Improvements

We’ve seen many avid discussions about the game, and many interesting suggestions for how to change or improve it. Diplomacy, pollution, religion, and war resolution are only some examples of the many topics that came up in these discussions. We are of course keeping a close eye on these discussions to understand what you do or do not like about the game and what changes you would like to see.

However, these are big topics that may require big changes to address your concerns thoroughly. We need to carefully consider the steps we take on these issues, and then take time to properly implement and test these changes, so we will unfortunately not be able to provide a quick solution to these, though we will continue to work on balance improvements that may help to alleviate some of the problems you have been talking about.

Protip: you can plant forests on cliff edges and on hills so that in defensive fights your gunner units will have cover while the enemy does not. Not as good as walls but it's better than sitting out in the open and it's only a flat 500 production per forest tile.

If you're cheeky you can even use it to break up line of sight so that you can focus fire enemy units down while the enemy is either losing entire actions or is unable to otherwise fire at units.

multiplayer is kind of... glitchy. it's playable, went through a whole 300 turn game with only one issue (never-ending turn in combat), but there're weird things. in no particular order:

i got no civics beyond the first four and the ones that come up when you develop certain technologies. i was not the host. the host aka player 1 seems to get all civics without issue.
the AI seems slower, none of them had picked a civilization by turn twelve, and didn't seem as aggressive
when i finished the game, my avatar on the main menu had the hair and skin colors of the player 1 avatar
the player three bug with all the city-state allegiances is still a problem, but if you grab that slot you can benefit from it

i kept babylon through the whole game and it was interesting. i'd managed to stay ahead by about 1000 fame for most of it, then hit a wall during the early industrial era where everyone else started to speed up, but then managed to snare a few later wonders and smashed through the tech tree for a big, big fame win (about ten turns before someone else finished the space race).

also, turns out the wasteland that you get from nuclear detonations can't be exploited, settled on, or otherwise used in any way. the ICBMs are tragically short-ranged, though, and can't even reach across a 'huge' continent. i feel like their range may be based on 'normal' sized continents? i feel like the ICBMs should just have unlimited range
