I hope this one does well enough that MS lets them work on another big project straight away - or that they give the first game to another studio to remaster. My worry is that they meet the same fate as Rare.

As much as I've enjoyed the smaller, more experimental games Double Fine put out (some more than others) it really feels like a waste that they haven't been working on projects like this for the last 15 years. It's where they shine.

I don't see anything changing, they just worry less about individual sales.

Also, Rare released their biggest hit by far and one of the most successful titles of this generation and have another huge project in the works.

If you're confused about why levitation was nerfed and have never seen a Psychonauts 1 speedrun, I would recommend it. They did go pretty strongly onto the nerfing, but I think that was likely a result of designing other traversal powers.

Also the biggest place I suspect a thing was cut was a level gating the barber shop. From a design perspective, it's weird to me that it's the only Ford level with no other level gating it, ala Compton and PSI King.

Also also, in terms of voice actors, it too took me a second to recognize Jack Black, but it took me a lot longer to recognize Elijah Wood for whatever reason.

I made a new save file and I'm convinced at this point that the people who hate the interns because they were mean to Raz didn't really interact with them while they were running around the area.

Spoiler obviously:

They move areas in between each brain and have a little dialogue spot where they talk to people and/or Raz. If you use Clairvoyance and see Raz through their eyes it's hilarious how some of them evolve over time in how they view Raz.

At the start almost every one (except Sam) will see Raz as him in his undies trying to cover up, but after the casino mission every one will see Raz different.

Lizzie see's Raz as a cool dude with a really cool Leather Jacket (
Gisu see's Raz in like mid kick-flip (

They all have an overall positive viewpoint of Raz after the casino mission (except Nora and Sam)

Sam see's Raz every single time as a Squirrel and Nora see's Raz every single time as a Mole.

But they do have conversations, some even apologize for the prank and say that Raz is 'pretty cool'

Also speaking about Clairvoyance they snuck a Brutal Legend cameo in with it here:

It's nice to to see Double Fine finally get a good game out without the developer trying to screw them over and what they can do with essentially infinite money behind them and free reign.

Wonder if they got enough ideas left to immediately work on a sequel or if they will think up something else first.

If I had to guess at cut content

1) A stage with the interns, likely a semi tutorial
2) Collectible records for that one intern
3) An Otto Mentalis stage
4) That upper path you can't quite reach in blast cap becky's cave
5) More with Raz's family (I don't think levels, just side quests)
6) A stage before Barber Ford (Otto?)

Rare did disappear for a long, long, long time and Sea of Thieves was not seen as a big hit at launch because it was a barren waste land. They've turned it into a hit the same way Hello Games turned No Mans Sky into a hit.

I do have some worries with Double Fine under neath Microsoft because of Microsoft's track history and I would agree that I would be a bit worried about it because Microsoft hasn't shown the best "I know how to run a game studio" at times. And by "at times" I mean the majority of times where almost every studio except for a few exceptions has talked about problems with Microsoft. (The exceptions being 343i, the Gears team and the Forza team)

Microsoft saw a problem in which they weren't getting exclusive games out fast enough or at all, and did what they did with problems which was to throw money at it when they bought out Obsidian and Double Fine. But if they don't see a return that the higher ups are happy with, they could quickly just turn around and cut'em loose because again, Microsoft doesn't have a good track record in this area.

it annoys me that they've said they're not doing any more crowdfunding because of the microsoft deal, when it was the only a bunch of fanatic weirdos with money that would fund this game. i feel like this was very close to the absolute optimal tim shafer/doublefine arrangement; a crowdfunding campaign where they can radically overpromise, and then finally at the end once they've realized as many of those promises as they can a big studio comes in to make the tough decisions and funding to get them over the line.

It hit its three month sales target in the first day; I'm not arguing it didn't improve over time and go on to be an unexpected massive success beyond expectations merely that that is the game Rare wanted to make and it was successful.

Double Fine will get to make the games Double Fine wants to make

I was missing this too. It's actually in one of the areas with a FLYING Bob, in the water, partially sunken. There were three of them total (different colors probably), so you already got two. It was near the beginning of one of the bog areas, I think Tia's but not certain, the first or second FLYING Bob head. Look down in the water.

It's not on the islands, those are leafy foliage, this is thorny vines.

Edit: floating -> flying. There are no floating Bobs, despite his name.

I kind of feel like that's more just to give them some resolution, rather then being in Sasha's lab in perpetuity. Or at least, I hope they wouldn't try to use them as a villain again, since there's now been two visits into his mind.

Finished the game recently, and I liked it!

It was definitely better than the first, which I think kinda trailed off during Asylum (and featured a bit too many horny kids from beginning to end).

As some people mentioned here, some parts of it feel cut. The whole driving force of the story also felt worse than the first game's, where the resolution is so much sweeter. Here it's not only not as cute, but also questionable. First game's "Wait, you see me like THIS?" line from your dad is one of the sweetest and funniest parts of it. Of course there are also things with Helmut, Ford and Gristol which could've been tied up nicer.

I understand how difficult it must be to make those kind of levels, but I do wish there were more shorter levels. Brain Tumbler, when you first visit it, shows like 20 doors, and of course the first thought that you have is "it's all levels", but nope. I think I would also prefer to have only one Ford level, as he's not exactly my favorite character. Although he definitely got way better from his lolrandom days.

I feel like some levels have gone on for far too long, making collection a pain (Bob's and Helmut's are biggest examples). I like how figments don't move as much and are so much more visible, but would it kill them to make journal entries for them per area so you could at least know where in a psychedelic forest you missed one barely-visible 2D image?

But of course those are minor complaints about otherwise fantastic game.

a return to camp could be a way to backdoor in development of a remaster too, i'd bet anything microsoft is champing at the bit for that. remasters are hot, psychonauts is generally considered a deeply flawed classic and utterly ripe for a once over to iron out some kinks and common complaints. this is speculative, not a spoiler.

Combat is much improved from the first game and IMO the combat arenas are usually quick and paced far enough away from one another.

The upgrade and pin system really helps with this, since it allows you to take the combat style which you are most comfortable with, and then ramp up the damage output. I'm garbage at fighting in this game, but if I can blind fire a shot, and have it bounce into half a dozen enemies and then set half the screen on fire -- then I don't need to get good. I just need to concentrate on chasing down health pickups while all the mayhem happens around me.

this is legit the best way to handle combat in this game anyway imo since you can do everything but melee on your lev ball. i'd get down once i'd cleared all the enablers and explosive guys and by that point the censors are for sure dead from AOE and ricochets anyway. you're good. i don't know if i would describe myself as like competent at games but i got through it without ever dying and i think i needed to use a fairy revive candy maybe once?

I'm viable ladies.

the combat in the game was straightforward and on the average difficulty side to me IMO. I fluff'd once to the double Panic Attack arena in Sensorium and that was it. They did a good job of having health props you could break spawn in for the longer fights so you never truly needed Psi Pops or Fluffs if you kept on top of those and didn't take too many hits in a row, and it always felt like the damage output from enemies struck a nice balance compared to how much health you'd have at that given point in the game if you were finding at least some of the half a minds.

I never touched the options that made the combat easier but I'm glad they're available for those that don't want to bother at all with that facet of the game.

i tended to need the psi pops out of combat or levels more often actually. if i'm trying to do a dumb jump and land up in the water a bunch or not notice the smoker and try to blitz up the beehive route twenty times, which btw i got like 90% of the way there in the limited time before the bees swarm you, without a climbing section i'd have made it lol you have to, there's no health spawns out there.

Finished this up today - on the whole, really enjoyed the experience and it's one of the best games of the year, for sure. That said, the back 1/3rd of the game felt like it was dragging a bit and felt a bit bloated to me compared to what had come before it.

If I'm honest, I think that they probably could have cut "real" Nick's whole storyline, and the whole deal with the Truman and the "mole" and it would have made for a more coherent and tighter story. The heart of the story is with the original psychonauts and dealing with their issues, and the spoilered stuff kind of strayed away from that core.
