So, Getter continues to have really awkward animation combined with a really good base story. Seems that the Getter is being shown as a more Go style force for good than the more apocalyptic tone it had in Arc, but the future story is coming, and that's the bit that really turned things in the manga. Curious how that'll be squared.

Anyway, the anime just got to my favorite bit, with the Getter team trying to make peace between humans and dinosaurs, including Takuma using his reputation as a dumbass to pull a fast one on the Emperor, letting Kamui meet up with his mother.

Really a shame that the production is such a mess, but I'm interested in seeing how it'll play out to the end.

I have to wonder this particular point. (manga spoilers) Go defends Getter as hope itself - but who the gently caress is this Go? Even he points out he has no idea how he's alive or how he got to Black Shin Getter. It reminded me of how Musashi pilots Getter Emperor 3, but of course, Musashi is long-dead, and the Musashis we see are endlessly created clones that get horribly killed but it doesn't matter since more will just keep coming. It also connects with people like Kei and Benkei that got eaten with Getter and then sung its praises. While I'm sure Go is honest, I'm not sure if he's trustworthy, entirely because he's already part of Getter at this point.

Takumas raw gremlin energy at the send off did a lot more to win me over on him than the entire rest of the show so far. Apparently Arcs going for 13 episodes so theres plenty of time to wrap this up, I do wonder how the gently caress things will go from here though.

Like are we still going to see (manga)the future with humanity on a genocidal crusade at the getters behest? You'd think go was a copy like musashi but the getter not having time travel capability was kind of a whole thing there.

I'm not seeing a goatee on Giant Robo. Looking it up, it looks like it might have started with Raideen, but I might be missing some big name that took that route prior.

Giant Robo definitely popularized the Egyptian look for giant robots, although Yokoyama's original manga didn't actually have the goatee. IIRC, the King Tut exhibit toured Japan around when he was writing the manga.

I want to say the first hero robot with one was Yuusha Raideen, but it's just as likely that there's some obscure Tezuka character or Mazinger Z monster-of-the-week that technically did it first.

Speaking of Getter, in the spirit of 2021 and the unusually weak summer season, I decided to try to slog through the one Getter series that's been fully translated that I hadn't so much as started, Dash (or Darkness, depending on the magazine).

It's got a bit of a bad reputation, even compared to Hein, but you know what?

Going by the first chapter, people are much too kind.

Sure, the borderline hentai rape-murders are tacky, the artwork is poor, and the character designs are dull. That's a given. But attention needs to be given to the pacing.

In fifty pages, about the length of a Shonen Jump intro chapter or one shot, all we get is that the disposable one shot bad guy is bad, and that the Getter team kills him. Meanwhile, the original, in fewer pages, actually went into showing how its protagonist worked as a person, why he was a badass, and what kind of situation needed him. (Dinosaurs.) You knew why you should care, and it wasn't a generic fight scene as everyone talked about their powers like they were in a 90s toy commercial. And the pacing doesn't get better from there, with whole chapters basically wasted on crap a better manga would cover in five pages if it bothered with the stupid thing at all.

The characters suck, the writing sucks, the art sucks, the edge is ridiculous (although it somehow results in a comparatively wimpy version of Ryoma with none of the attitude that makes him an interesting character in the real Getter serieses)... I can see why this series died unmourned.

Hey, can someone who reads Japanese help me out? There's a couple paragraphs of wikipedia page for Combattler V that interest me, but they're a little too much for google translate.

On the other hand, the character and mechanic designs have been reset once by Nagahama. Nagahama invited children from the neighborhood every time he previewed "Rydeen," but when they returned, he saw the design of this work on Nagahama's desk and criticized it, so he decided to change the design. [3] According to Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Murakami was in charge of designing the robot, and Yasuhiko corrected the part where he could not take action in a drawing manner [7].

However, due to the arrangement at the animation production side's own judgment, it was forced to take a lot of labor and expense such as recreating the mold to match this, which left a dissatisfaction for the sponsor Poppy. For this reason, in the next work "Voltes V", the poppy side decided the design of the robot early in the planning stage, and said, "Don't mess with the robot anymore. I received it. I don't want to think about it again. "[8] Also, despite not being able to touch the design at all, the setting of the special move was also changed at the last minute at the end of 1976, and as a result it is scheduled to end in accordance with the change of the key station name. This work was extended until the end of May 1977, and we had no choice but to devote time to the start of "Voltes V" and the manufacture and supply of toys.

Can't say if you'll like it any better later, but it doesn't go so hard on "Look at this! Death! Gore! Isn't this SHOCKING?" past the opening chapter.

The "real" Michiru is fine, for example.

The manga played with some interesting ideas, the art is good (although it really doesn't play nice with lower quality scans), and in general I enjoyed the ride. That said, I read it comparatively early in my Getter run, so I can see it playing different for long time fans.

Darkness, by contrast, is just bad. The vices already mentioned continue throughout its run, although it has stretches where the horny isn't as extreme as in the first volume, but it also comes up with exciting and different terrible ideas to play with. To start with the characters... As I mentioned, this version of Ryoma is just the most painfully earnest Shonen protagonist jagoff you could ever hope to find, with none of the original's spark. Hayato is, like the original, an ex-terrorist, but he's got this whole drugs for superpowers thing, with his terrorism only occurring as a response to a world gone mad, rather than because he was bored. He also loses something with this Ryoma. In the original, Hayato and Ryoma were counterweights to each other, with Ryoma being the psycho able to match the terrorist serial killer in crazy, letting Hayato play more cold blooded, if only by contrast. Here, though, Hayato is a berserker and, without another total nutjob, loses the whole "I'm the only sane guy here, and I'm an ex-terrorist who murdered people for the fun of it." angle that makes him interesting.

And finally, the Musashi here... isn't. Skinny instead of stocky, no judo skills, weird backstory, and the basic role as the nice guy on the team (well, girl in this case) is rendered obsolete by the Ryoma being a generic nice guy plot point. Instead of a group dynamic where two psychos are held together by a good natured doofus, you get two vaguely nice people trying to keep a psycho from psychoing too much. (Also, I feel like a girl Musashi should be stockier, you know? Bare minimum, Uraraka style "a tiny bit pudgy". Actually, Uraraka is a lot more like Musashi than Darkness's Musashi, which feels like it shouldn't even be a thing.)

The plot also has the Getter Rays be evil, rather than morally ambiguous, so it invents anti-getter rays, which... basically do everything Getter Rays do, but without the cool "Uh, should we be doing this? This seems like a bad idea" that Getter Rays proper cause. Even if you're doing the Evil Getter plot, you should either go with the fighting fire with fire route, or the mundane weapons against the apocalypse route. Not just giving people a weapon that's like Getter, but dull.

Oh, and finally, the majority of the manga is flashbacks, with no real progress on the supposed main plot. At least when Mazinger Zero went into flashbacks, we got new information about the wider world. Here, we don't even get that.

Demonbane to me is a mixed bag. From a Lovecraft perspective it uses Lovecraft characters and concepts but doesn't really deal much with Lovecraftian themes. Lovecraftian horror is mostly about the feeling of powerlessness against an unfathomable harmful force, and having a ggod-robot that can destroy universes as a side-effect of it doing battle kind of runs counter to that idea. From a wow cool robots perspectives it has some neat robots and fights though, and seeing Demonbane slowly acquire upgrades until it reaches godmode status is fun.

The writing is also very chuuni in a way i find charming and enjoyable, special mention goes to the robot girl that has a giant cannon that launches out of a coffin and is named Dig Me No Grave. The VN recently went on sale on JAST but it should be mentioned it is straight-up porn, so be aware of that if you intend to buy it.
