My first exposure to "memes" was probably through popular videos (when did the term "viral" first start being used?) like The Burger King Song, Internet People! (and many of the references therein), various JibJab videos, and of course, All Your Base. Fun fact I just discovered: Something Awful is directly credited in the Wikipedia article for "Viral Video". In terms of image memes and macros, I'm not sure about the first, but by quantity FAIL memes were definitely the ones that appealed most to cringey high school me, as can be seen from these images I pulled from the archive of my website I made in high school:
