Good morning! It's Key, Jay and, Z hosted by Greg, Paul and Kenneth! Coming up next, it's Greeny, brought to you by Claire and Ben. Now we throw it to Bart and Hahn, here are your hosts Bill and Phil. And now we're headed to the Max Kellerman Show, with our hosts Chris del Chris and Carpiss Bunson.

Be sure to pay a monthly fee for our programs where you don't know who will be there and neither do we! This is ESPN PLUS. Should have just paid Le Batard and let them go from eight til two.

Wonder if anyone has scoured college and high school records and found any scorigamis in the elusive 1 column? Seems like some eccentric high school coach somewhere could’ve taken the 1-pt PAT safety when he’s pitching a shutout just for the novelty of it.

Defector is coming up on their first anniversary. They had around 40,000 subscribers, which generated most of their $3.2 million in revenue. Little over half of that covered salary and benefits for their full time folks. Now the fun part for them is to see how many folks re-up / forget to cancel the auto-pay for year 2. https://defector.com/one-year-of-defector/ Also, they're starting a tip-jar, the money goes to subscriptions for folks who can't afford one on their own. https://defector.com/tip-jar-subscriptions/

Amanda Mull has a fabulous piece in The Atlantic about how F1 is attracting new fans from the states at a time when overall viewership (and participation) is fallingquote:I feel conflicted about these things—and other Drive to Survive converts I spoke with described their new obsession as, at best, problematic. But I also find F1 a refreshing change from American sports, which for all their lofty self-descriptions fare at least as poorly under the microscope. The NFL, for example, just spent a season marketing itself as an opponent of racism while defending in court its use of “race norming,” which assumes that Black players naturally have lower cognitive abilities than their white counterparts, and therefore should be paid less when football harms their brains. (The league announced in June that it will eliminate the norms but continued to deny they were discriminatory.) The difference is that Formula 1 assumes you’re smart enough to understand that nothing involving this much money is likely to be morally sound.

DTS really has been an incredible boon for F1 and I've encountered so many new fans (that otherwise eschew sports entirely), all thanks to the series. If anything, it shows just how deep Netflix's reach really is.

Normally i wouldn’t care much but this is particularly funny given that Bill Simmons is obsessed with 35 year old movies and loves to just rehash them over and over. There was a minor dust up because he was very dismissive of one of the tent poles of the year and you know, the way he said it. Listened to Ethan Strauss formerly Sherwood Strauss on the Jesse Singal Podcast? For some reason. He's pivoting from the contrarian old time young guy of basketball journalism into something like whyyyy? are sports getting sooo woke? the answer may surprise you: Nike, and CAA. And that's the bad news" Seems pretty dumb. You can oppose identity politics from a perspective of them being a distraction from class politics, or that they're needlessly divisive in a more old fashioned liberal framework. His argument is basically that it will be "bad for sports" in what I'm guessing is the citing of those ratings numbers. Seems pretty tenuous. Anyone read his substack? houseofstrauss.substack.com It's not actually bad. Most of the stuff is reasonable, some of it is a bit much. I guess he's trying to position himself as a sort of greenwald of sports, fearless, really right about a lot of things, very wrong about others, loving to be an rear end in a top hat all day.

There are lots of good people on substack they just usually wind up there because they got laid off and are trying to make some money rather than because they publicly quit their job in a huff and pretended to be canceled so they could make even more money than they already were.

I'm curious if anyone has actually tried to rectify that difference. His whole premise was talking about how far down it was from the Big 3 Heat era rating, which were a huge outlier for NBA ratings post-Jordan, he's not trying to be intellectually honest. He only got on the ratings beat in the first place so he could whine about political correctness while using the number to claim he was just being objective rather than a guy who hates black people being politically active and talking about stuff that makes him personally uncomfortable. He's trying to position himself as like The Thinking Man's Clay Travis but I'm pretty sure the only people it has really worked on is other NBA writers who used to do a podcast with him.
