Is it just a matter of my personal taste, or is basically all the chinese and korean stuff that gets uploaded to mangadex basically terrible?

The art might be nice but I've neither personally read any that were anything better than average, or even heard other people talk about comics they like.

I read like a billion villainess comics and I would have to say that the average Korean villainess webcomic is significantly better than the average Japanese villainess manga. While there's still a lot of them with oddly similar premises, they don't feel quite so attached to being a parody of this one exact otome game pastiche, so there's a lot more variety that isn't just, like, off-the-wall parody stuff.

The Chinese stuff is all crap though, I'm sorry.

for webcomics imo you're also (usually) better off just reading the official English release not whatever rip or fan translation got uploaded.

Not all of the official translations are great, I can think of at least three specifically all from different publishers that were just painfully bad, but overall my reader experience has been rip/fan tl < official and that has actually made a difference in how much I liked reading some of them. 30-Year-Old Bachelor was a good example, I read a few chapters when it was getting fan translated and didn't really get into it but it was much more engaging reading the official tl (although still a bit stiff). I think overall manhua tends to have worse translations so that's something I just kind of brace for when I read one, but that's not universal -- Bring the Love and Lout of Count's Family have probably *the worst* official tls I've seen on any of them and I've read quite a few.

One thing to look for is who did the localization -- most places now will include some kind of credit, and if it's not one of the in-house ones by the platform you're reading it on (e.g. Tappytoon, Tapas, etc.) it may be of lower quality because they're just using the script they got from the original publisher. Count's Family is a good example of that -- Copin Comics did the original localization and it honestly is terrible, and then Tappytoon licensed it but they're still using Copin's version. This also happens with manga though -- at least with some BL titles that have bounced around through multiple English publishers. Some of them use a script that came from the original publisher and some of them will redo it so you'll have different translations with different levels of quality and readability.

With a rip you may or may not be getting good quality images especially the way they often have to be stitched together, and I think the practice of ripping official releases and uploading them is incredibly lovely and wish people wouldn't support it.

It depends on what you want out of them as well; I've read a lot of really good BL comics and a lot of decent/mediocre ones, but if you don't want to read BL then that's not much help to you. There are a lot of very fun action comics with great art -- one I'm reading now that I haven't seen mentioned much is Legend of the Northern Blade which has some really dynamic art and action. Also Father Unrivaled is super fun, and Solo Leveling is ridiculous but the art is really slick and I enjoy reading it partly just because of how pretty it is. There are also some drama/slice of life ones that don't get talked about a whole lot here like Navillera.

Basically just like manga it's a really broad media category with a range of high to low quality content and you have to be selective and know what you want to read, and just digging around in whatever someone happened to upload to mangadex is not imo the best way to get a good selection.

Don't really have opinions on the Chinese comics but yeah the Korean stuff knocks it out of the park and I've noticed a lot of my reading has transitioned that way - especially for villainess comics. Sucks most of the good ones don't make it to mangadex, though, and you have to go to individual scanlator sites like in the long long ago.

For Chinese manhwa, I like Release That Witch. It's sort of an isekai power fantasy, but it's also about a modern engineer taking over a medieval world using a combination of magic and physics, and the characters are fun.

That's pretty much the beginning and end of Chinese stuff on my Mangadex list though.

Even worse than that I feel like with effort and care even if David Kaye wasn't available or otherwise engaged they could have found someone who could do it justice; but not only does the voice sound like a random predacon grunt, or heck, sounds like it is more suited to friggin Scorponok but the character was completely botched.

The writers/producers must have been super fans of Dinobot though, because his characterization was alright to even kinda decent even good? Its weird, but the voice was completely different but he followed by Black Arachnia get something close to decent characterization.

Tigatron is butchered almost as much as Megatron; it's just a terribly implemented series all around despite hitting the right check boxes for what a decent Transformers series should be; the plot is even interesting! I like how they seem to get some interesting ideas to play around with from the Transformers particularly the G1 and Beast Wars mythos with all the time travel shenanigans to attempt something that is honestly kinda ambitious.

But the casting and writing choices all undercut it, why.

there was a dude who was doing an AI-powered upscale of Beast Wars(and ReBoot) but iirc he tried to sell it to hasbro and they were like NAHHHHHH and so he stopped. it loving sucks because it was SO GOOD

this is a direct PAL DVD rip from 6 years ago of the intro and is "ok" quality

now look at his "4k Upscale". it's insanely good quality

like yeah the visuals are of course still dated but they look clean as hell considering this is an upscaling of a 1996 CGI tv show.

I agree, though since it was based on a toyline called War Planets, it does make sense why they went with that name in the US at least.

still regret not ever being able to get any of the War Planets stuff as a kid. I remember seeing racks of the Planet Eater on double triple clearance and not being able to convince mom to get one even when it was like 5 bucks, she was just like "you'll either get in a fight over it with your sister or throw it at her" lol

The Japanese dub of Beast Wars made it more jokey and Beast Wars 2 follows that trend, it's very much a kids problem of the week show without much of the more complex character writing and longer plot arcs that made the western cg series so good, and the animation is often pretty cheap since it was made to quickly capitalize on beast wars' success.

but taken on its own its a pretty decent kids show. the comedy relief villains are hilarious, and the back half of the series does introduce enough plot to keep things going, especially a bizarrely pretty decent subplot about lio convoy (convoy is the japanese name of optimus prime, so you can think of him as lionimus prime) becoming a father and having to deal with that responsibility. Not the kind of material you'd expect a transformers series to cover! though it was probably just an excuse to have a cuter, more kid-friendly lion robot running around. and galvatron gets more development than usual. the series does introduce a theme of family in those later episodes and does a decent job exploring it. its still a kids show, so you can probably imagine most of the beats they hit with it, but the fact it extends to the villains too is interesting.

its got no real relation to the western beast wars series beyond 'robots that turn into animals' though, there's no real continuity connection and nobody who was in the beast wars cg cartoon shows up save for a couple references to galvatron and megatron knowing each other, since in this continuity they're separate characters. there is a starscream, but he's just using starscream's name, the same way beast wars megatron uses megatron's name.

the sequel series to beast wars ii, beast wars neo, is kinda mediocre. but the protagonist is named 'Big Convoy' and his catchphrase is 'I never trust anyone, except for my Big Cannon,' so maybe its actually really good.
