Sorry for being the OP responsible. Anyone want to talk about how Hugh Thompson hits all the wickets for MIC-adjacent imperialist stooge whose name is acceptable because he never published any scathing remarks or rejected fascist oligarchy after his imperial stooging was over? I think a couple of million people in the military and adjacent learning about Smedley Butler for the first time in an incredibly unavoidable way would be delightful. Not everyone is a cynical and capably literate veteran of bullshit wars. I didn't suggest his name to surprise the loving guy on his birthday. Lighten up, Francis.

Fair, but no one is going to wiki him, and no one will remember the 30 second blurb that explains who he was- or they will just ignore the end of his career. "Twice awarded the Medal of Honor" will be all anyone remembers. I couldn't tell you poo poo about Bragg, other than the Union liked facing him because he wasn't very good. And he was a traitor. But I am a cynical, bitter old man, so take that as you will. I'd love if we named them after people that not only deserved it, but deserve a greater role in the American Psyche. I'd poo poo a chicken if all of them had an anti-war/anti-authority bend to them. Tangentially related- I understand why so many VN Vets became more anti-war as they aged; things you were fine with when you were younger, suddenly dawn on you as a fictional moment removed from your life; it wasn't you doing those things, but a kid that looked like you. And you realize that everyone in that situation was a child. That's terrifying. E- was typing before the warning.

I'm willing and deserving of catching a probation to clarify something important to me which plays into your final comment about VN Vets. Call it "L'esprit de l'escalier". Butler served in the Marine Corps for 34 years loving poo poo up for generation upon generation of the local nationals throughout the Philippines and Central America. The singular thing he should be credited for is not just introspectively coming to understand why and how he acted, but to acknowledge and spread his awareness of his own complicity. And quite frankly coming to grips with that "I am deeply conflicted about my service" turning into "The society and culture I was raised within is a farce" is something that VN vets and GWOT vets absolutely share in common. The terrifying part to me is we may not be wrong and yet have to navigate some pretty rough loving waters. I'm often surprised how helpful GiP can be to me personally in dealing with those times.

boop the snoot posted:How many bases are named after the confederate army as opposed to the Union? So after looking it up (i.e. clicking a bunch of Wikipedia links), if you count any active facility named for anyone who served in the Union Army, it's around a dozen. If you go a bit stricter and only count major* facilities named for Union generals,** it's six: Fort Shafter, Fort Custer, Fort Dix, Fort Meade, Fort Sill, and the Schofield Barracks. There used to be a lot more - including Fort McClellan in Alabama, Fort Slocum in New York, and Camp Sherman in Ohio - but those bases have long since closed. This can be contrasted to the ten major* active bases currently named for Confederates: Camp Beauregard, Fort Benning, Fort Bragg, Fort Gordon, Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Hood, Fort Lee, Fort Pickett, Fort Polk, and Fort Rucker. As to why there's so many bases named after Confederates, the vast majority of the bases in these lists were opened up as training camps during either or both of the World Wars. Most of these camps were named after locally relevant military figures, and after years of reorganizations and closures the bases in the south have formed the majority of what's remained. so given that tradition, Fort Lee should definitely be renamed to Fort Benjamin O. Davis imo *For a given value of major **there is also technically Fort Campbell, but he was a political general, didn't see combat, and was only active for a couple months. e: I also propose renaming Fort Benning to Fort Flipper, and Fort Bragg to Fort Robinson. the latter suggestion I do not make lightly, given Bragg's many contributions to the Union cause. A shitload of these antivaxxers won't trust medicine as a preventative, but will flip once they get burned. But, the monoclonals aren't very available or are expensive.
