It's funny because a big complaint over there is that Howard is Hollywood now and doesn't lace into people like he used to, and now they're all mad that he's doing exactly that (although I'm sure you're right about it being a lot of alt accounts)

Generally speaking that group is white Republicans, thus Howard's rants against the group generally devolve into the redneck stereotypes, etc. When is the last time he laced into someone who wasn't a generic, faceless person "like he used to"? Probably Wendy Williams, a classic tirade that did feel like the old days, and which was subsequently scrubbed from existence, though it has been preserved. Yeah the Wendy Williams rant was the last time I can remember where it was straight up old school Stern, the guy who would brutally mock the children of celebrities and laugh at Jackie when his poor cat got run over. Then fast forward to when Bianca died and him acting like it should be a national day of mourning. By the way, I'm not one of those people who honestly still expects the show to feature stuff like the Marge Schott impression (which was really just a way to get Billy to scream the n word) but man, has radio gotten so bland over the years. Reddit's CEO recently posted some lame rear end statement saying how they won't really fight misinformation and will leave it up to the subreddit admins and that's caused quite a controversy as most subs have been slowly taken over by alt-right posters. /r/canada has a mod that is a known white supremacist and they've done nothing about it. Reddit will be going public soon so it will be interesting to see what they will allow to be posted. I'm betting all the porn subs will be banned which will hurt them.

At a certain point the Swap Shop guys began to notice it was Richard and Sal so they'd just hang up and be like "aw darn, we lost him" so that the audience wasn't clued in. There was one guy who was really good at doing an "Awww, I'm sorry, you're calls fading, it's fading" patter so he could talk over them as they disconnected the call to hide it from the audience. Could be that. Also I just remembered that those stations must have been super low budget because I think they had weekly giveaways of $25 giftcards to local restaurants which is just really loving tiny.

My grandmother back in the 80’s use to set by the radio with pen and paper in hand while listening to our local version of Swap Shop. What I would have given for a Richard and Sal type pranker to call in. Oh I miss the days of doing prank calls with my friends. Caller ID and *69 killed that us.

I don't wanna be THAT Goon but how many of these are real vs fake? I can remember picking up these kinds of radio shows driving through Kentucky. I could pick one or two up in Louisville if the weather was right. Things I remember is a women selling a "slight used" prom dress (size 20) and a guy that would call in every week to advertise he had 100 yards are trailer underpinning. I guess he wasn't getting any calls because each week he'd sound more frustrated and speaking slower, like he was trying to get more people to hear him. In the 90s I used to prank call people by using 1-800-COLLECT at a payphone and calling out of state. It was usually just dumb messages, but it was pretty common to have someone accept the charges to come on the phone and scream at me. It was hilarious.

If your'e shocked by how racist the subreddit is, it was nothing compared to the actual Howard Stern forums. They shut them down lickety split, Howard posted a few times, but it was mostly people calling eachother various ethnic slurs and photoshops of Beth's head on a horse. Even as someone who was a listener for years and in the middle of their 19 - 21 year old " free speech is essential " phase at the time , it was bad. I've never been to the 4chans or 8coons, but I'd imagine they are very similiar.

I was assuming they would replay it. There is definitely some anti-Muslim stuff that happens, but it is very indicative of the shock, fear, and anger that everyone in the US felt that day.

It sucked at first, being a go-nowhere story about Howard and Ralph going to some party where Pamelar Anderson was, but then stuff happened. This was relatively recently after one or more Yankees had killed themselves accidentally crashing private propeller planes into some building, so that's what they were assuming. Also, it was the week after Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf died.  Joey Boots called in at one point and tried to say all the listeners should beat up any arabian-looking people they saw in the street, but Howard cut him off immediately, which I thought was good. Also, Artie called in and (for me, at least) became the offical Jackie-chair occupant.
