Robobot posted:What is the Thunderdome? I see a lot of avatars about it. It's a thing/thread over in Creative Convention for people who like/want to write. Each week there's a new prompt to write something about, you opt in if you want to, and then you have to post your entry by a deadline. The winner (judged to be the best entry) of a given week gets to pick the prompt and judge the entries for the next week; the loser (judged to be the worst entry) gets the Thunderdome Avatars you keep seeing. So to put that archive link in perspective: it says that CB entered the weekly contest 24 times, but then chickened out and shamed themselves by posting nothing for 17 of them (failures). Of the 7 times they did write something, 1 of them was judged to be the worst entry of the week (loss), and another 3 were judged to be 2nd- or 3rd-worst of the week (dishonorable mention).

I had never considered that the intent of that series was not to gross people out. That sure is something.

Even besides the monkeu post, there's some eerily prophetic poo poo in there. quote:Guess Afghanistan will be bombed back to the stone age tonight. Whoops, too late for that Keep in mind this was like 15 minutes after the planes hit, when everyone was still trying to figure out what the gently caress was going on. Also someone randomly guessed Osama was behind it on page 2. I'm not sure if I should chalk it all up to lucky guess, drawing obvious conclusions or reality playing out in literally the dumbest possible way.

People were guessing it was Osama minutes after the Oklahoma City bombing as well. He was a pretty safe guess when looking for who was responsible for terror attacks on the US.

it's cool how the person saying that had just finished talking about how awful it was that so many people had probably died and that the plane itself was probably full of people. Then because its swarthy foreigners its straight into genocide.

I was in class and didn't even know SA existed then. I have always been behind the times on internet things, don't think I had anything but dialup till 2005.

My other biggest regret is that I had an exam in sociology class that night and I spent a lot of the day studying for it. I can still remember that someone had turned on the projector and put CNN on and my professor didn’t know how to turn it off, so looped mass carnage was projected onto her face while she explained the test. It was like 2 weeks into the semester. I don’t even know how we could have has a test that soon.

I had just gotten home from school when I saw the news but I'd been worried about the Taliban for a while before then. They'd destroyed a pair of very ancient and quite large statues of Buddha. Naturally, most of my classmates didn't give a poo poo about who the Taliban were or what they did at the time because "it's not my religion they're blowing up." And then by the same time next year they were utterly rabid with War on Terror fervor and casual, genocidal racism.

My genius fifth grade teacher let a bunch of ten year olds watch the news all day. No one else in my elementary school knew what was going on so my class got to spread the news at lunch.

I was 9 and had no idea what the WTC was so I had no idea why my mom was glued to the TV all morning or why nobody would stop talking about it for the rest of the day.

I was doing class credit volunteering in an ESL class and was helping lead a scavenger hunt around campus when we saw the first tower having been hit on a tv in one of the student lounges, we were just like "oh...huh" and continued on for lack of a better idea. The rest of classes that day were like "Well, there's a national tragedy but I guess we still need to do chemistry". What a surreal day. I wasn't on the forums until a few years later, I probably would've just ignored it forever if I'd seen any joking around at the time.

I was playing the game Incubation: Time Is Running Out. It's not a great game, but it was the first 3D tactical turn based RPG I played, and I will never forget its goofy low poly models. In a way, the time was running out for terrorists all over the world.
