wolfs posted:hey China did a 'crackdown' (not even really that extreme) on foreign actors, especially playing historical Chinese figures, and especially especially those using China as a tax dodge scheme, this combined with some party official making a kinda generic boomer-y 'we gotta keep the kids from being pussies who do League of Legends all day' poo poo kinda got conflated to 'China says all Koreans are soyboy cucks who are queering up the place'. Like, yea I don't love the framing of things but I don't think there's been any actual action beyond government grumbling and one famous actress (I think who may be Chinese anyway? I forgot) getting busted for massive tax crimes and getting dropped from all her shows.

this story is really amazing https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-10/new-red-roulette-memoir-claims-china-kidnapped-billionaire basically about this couple that did massive amounts of corruption, then the state arrests one of them and the other flees the country, and somehow this is seen as china in the wrong imagine the headline "america kidnaps bernie madoff" lol wtf the state cant kidnap people, we call that incarceration or the judicial system. the money quote is "A former member of the CPPCC, China’s political advisory body, Shum said his views on China began to sour in 2008 when the party began to reestablish control over the economy, the media, the Internet and the educational system. Party committees were forced on private businesses, including his." I love how hes like "I used to love china when it corruptly let me become a billionaire, but now that there are consequences for my actions, I don't like it" I hope he's extradited and all of his illicit gains given back to the people.

stephenthinkpad posted:Read the article and doesn't seem like the book has lot of actual dirt. yea it sounds like the worst sin this book does is be incredibly dull with nothing juicy in it. Like, 'China's oppressive government has KIDNAPPED AND HELD RANSOM their wealthy betters (by arresting them legally for massive fraud and corruption)" isn't new but I was at least hoping there'd be some juicy drama.

https://twitter.com/Reuters/status/1436363839474307073?s=20 So Nord Stream 2 is done. We'll see when it starts pumping gasoline to Germany. I believe Gazprom is hoping before the end of the year. China, Russia expand trade settlements in local currencies to counter US dollar hegemony In other Gazprom related news the company is switching from US dollars to yuan and rubles to pay for refueling aircraft flying to or from China. As the two countries continue to remove the dollar from their bilateral trade.

wolfs posted:hey https://www.chinalawtranslate.com/en/content-regulation/ Someone posted this translation a couple of pages back but I don't know how accurate it is/the site's affiliation. From my understanding China is trying to crack down on celebrity culture, and the most popular variant of that in China is kpop and kpop adjacent stuff. It's really weird and gross for western media to editorialize that as "effeminate" behavior. Also in the last 1-2 years there was a major Chinese court ruling that strengthened LGBTQ+ rights in China. I don't know why they'd suddenly want to backtrack on that.

AnimeIsTrash posted:https://www.chinalawtranslate.com/en/content-regulation/ Apparently the term used is 娘炮 which translates to "sissy men" according to zhongwen. Anyway, this seems to be a notice and not a law, and while I don't know a lot about Chinese law it doesn't seem like it would make queer representation on Chinese tv a legal offense. The translation also makes it seem really vague about what this notice is trying to achieve.

The translation also makes it seem really vague about what this notice is trying to achieve. from what I've seen it depends on context, if used as an insult it has a more gendered 'sissy' kinda tone yea but in terms of a general address unless the guy doing it was really feeling himself he probably meant the less gendered 'fake image of yourself' in the context of emulating Korean pop culture rather than taking pride in being Chinese and all. Nationalist, yea, but unless he threw in more obviously 'and stop bein a bunch of queers like those Koreans are!!!' poo poo he likely more meant it that way than sexually.
