The guys in my electrician's shop on my minesweep wanted to deep-six a mag sweep frequency modulator that had to be logged/accounted for every year because it was classified tech but was obsolete since it didn't actually connect with any of the mag systems onboard anymore. The thing was huge and took up a good chunk of space in the shop, but gently caress if I was going to be the DIVO to pull the trigger on that.

I was once responsible for getting an obsolete system decommissioned and removed from our offices. After 6+ months I managed to arrange for the ostensible managers of said equipment to come truck the whole setup away, which included several workstations and an entire server rack. It freed up an entire room for us which had previously been mostly useless, so big win.

About two days later I get a call from the folks over at a different office asking why a particular system of theirs is offline. It turned out that they had, without any kind of documentation, installed their server in the [obsolete system] rack, which otherwise supported a completely different purpose. I assured them that, whatever it is, it's been properly handled, but it's now in another state so someone is going to have to go get it back.

I think that MBAs are useful, in case you are looking for an answer to the question of "Is lightpole a total fucking idiot".
Had a 7 day lay period in Sharja. Was headed up to take care of something when I walked by the chief mate and the Trident TL soaking wet and pissed.

Apparently the ABs were offloading garbage to the dock and one of the bags filled with plastic fell in and started floating away. One of the ABs decided to jump in after it to prevent this Marpol breach. It quickly became apparent there was a decent rip in the harbor and he gave up on the bag and tried heading for the rig behind us but was not a very strong swimmer, causing the CM and the TL to assist in his rescue.

I think they flew him home the next day.

I had a bizarre experience today.

Our local stores have "veteran parking" in front, next to the handicapped and family with small child spots. I parked there, because I earned it.
As I'm putting my groceries away, I hear a voice from the cart return (behind me and across a vehicle lane) "drat kids taking parking spots from REAL veterans."
So I turn around and there's this generic mid-sixties Boomer (:chud:) looking right at me.
I said "excuse me?"
:chud: "you heard me."
I said "I was in boot camp ON 9/11 and..." I got cut off. By a voice from BEHIND ME (in front of the store).
"Hey kid, quit bothering this young man." I turn, and there's this old dude (:stat:) wearing a campaign hat with some amphib on it; bunch of pins.
:chud: "who you callin a kid?"
:stat: bursts out from DEEP IN HIS CHEST with a spot-on drill instructor voice: "YOU. NOW GET IN YOUR CAR, PUT ON YOUR GODDAMN MASK, AND QUIT ACTING LIKE A CHILD."
I turned to him and said, in the most heartfelt tone I've ever uttered "thank you for your service."
:stat: growled "Ugh, i'm gonna pay for that tomorrow, but sometimes it's worth it"
I was so shocked and stunned I just nodded like this was an everyday thing, shut the trunk, and got in my car, and left. I could see :chud: scurrying away from the store, tail between his legs.

The experience was just so... something. There's this huge adrenalin rush from "some dude is accosting me and I'm about to get in a fight" and then whatever chemical from "some random old DI is sticking up for me" and I can't even.

Cargo cult patriotism seems to be more of a thing these days. Like you’re a “real troop” only if you’re a middle aged white Christian male that drives a truck and owns an AR, and actually having been in the military is secondary, and even doing cop stuff or whatever counts so long as you look the part and talk tough. Like Trump and Madison Cawthorn.

If you were a high ranking delta-ranger-seal but don’t look like an action movie star and have not chud views than you’re still not a real troop patriot or whatever.

IE John Kerry did high speed proto-SWCC and got shot and blown up and stuff but since he was an anti-war he never counted. It’s like that has become more commonplace.

Reagan liked to make fun of people dying of AIDS and give death squads guns so that might make up for him being more of a neoliberal than a fascist.

What’s really weird is to read about not only Eisenhower but Nixon, despite him being the first GOP candidate to ever culture war if only a tiny bit he would be a raging socialist by todays standards, he wanted a UBI.

Children of a zero percent or more rated veteran get their tuition waived at all CA public colleges and universities as long as they don't have income above the national poverty level (which is easy for a full time student). I don't have GI Bill because Annapolis didn't qualify at the time.

Depends on the state. In Wisconsin if you're rated 30% or higher all of your dependents get free college in the UW system and most of the technical colleges.

It's funny you mention Wisconsin since I am now one state to the west. My son is consider UW Madison since they have a D1 soccer team and he's played soccer at a pretty high level most of his childhood. I doubt he is going to be an international superstar or anything but he did get a few Premier League development team training camp invites and his team travels (or did before covid) to Spain and Italy for tournaments.

He has my GI Bill but is finishing his senior year of school in California. I am now retired from the Marine Corps and living in Minnesota. I am pretty sure he qualifies for in state tuition rates even in Wisconsin since he is going to college less than 3 years since I separated. Does anyone have any experience with or more knowledge of that?
