Yeah any labour policy will basically change nothing without a myriad of backup policies (so won't happen) and that's exactly as intended. However to the rest of the centrists it'll 'sound' good so they'll all clap and then conveniently forget about it. e: 28 is how many times Stairmaster will re-invent himself before the next election. 0 is how many policies he will commit to. e2: Catte Mebh fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Sep 12, 2021 |

So no vaccine passports, fine, but.... are there any other restrictions? He says that they're focusing on 'other defenses' which are..... what exactly? Hoping people get vaccinated if they haven't already been? Contact tracing and isolating people who test positive? One of the arguments against vaccine passports I've heard is that being vaccinated doesn't actually stop transmission. But nothing else appears to be happening now to stop transmission? I dunno it boggles my mind a bit, we're hoping to come back from Canada to the UK in December finally, but it's going to be really weird to come from a place where masks are still mandated (and the vast majority of people do wear them indoors, on buses etc.), vaccine passports are about to come in to... cross your fingers and hope for the best. Ugh.

The UK government has been consistently trying to do as little as possible so as long as the bodies are not literally piling up in the streets they will not take any measures whatsoever. Javid is a libertarian if it helps, he doesn't believe in the government doing anything other than handing out money to rich people. So when he (or frankly, anyone else in the government) says "we're not doing that we're doing other things" the "other things" bit is a lie, they are actually not doing anything but "doing other things" is like "listening to your concerns" which is to say a method of saying "no and gently caress you" without sounding like it. If we're doing railchat, I can't remember if I ever posted this here or not, but it's a pretty interesting documentary about the construction of the Victoria Line, maybe the last hurrah of the New Elizabethan era: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwRRSJ_wtIg It's interesting from multiple directions, obviously the just sheer traininess of it all but specifically the difficult and delicate operation to divert the Piccadilly Line tunnels at Finsbury Park to allow cross-platform interchange with the new line (starts at 18 minutes), the breathtakingly futuristic Automatic Train Operation system and the use of CCTV being seen as actually faintly sinister (34ish minutes) and just generally the culture shock of it all, from workmen in tweeds and hobnails rather than hiviz hand hard hats, the occasional slips of stuff like snortingly dismissing women shopping on Oxford Street while MEN toiled below, but most of all this, the horniest bit of celluloid created by the British government::[1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwRRSJ_wtIg&t=983s Homosexuality was still illegal in Britain when this was filmed, so there's nothing at all suspicious about the two full minutes of footage of shirtless workmen accompanied by commentary about iron in their buttocks and mighty appetites and thirsts, punctuated with a smoky jazz score. [1] Well apart from the ones allegedly seized from REDACTED at Dover that one time.
