If we hated wetlands so much, why would we build artificial ones as a compromise for the ones we pave over. Sure they dry up in under two years but it's really the wildlife's fault for not getting the hint and if we put frogs on welfare when where do we stop?

So sounds like the storm's gonna stay tropical storm levels at least? I know from living in Houston that doesn't mean a ton but it'd be nice to mainly worry about water rather than my piece of poo poo neighborhood having poo poo flying through it.

rain is arguably a way bigger threat until you get up to pretty intense winds and/or storm surge threats

people are always like "lol just rain" but rain straight up kills tons of people and just annihilates infrastructure

Yea I know rain is a major issue, but I'm used to prepping for rain and all, I can't do much about wind other than hope poo poo doesn't fall down too close to me like the time my neighbor's shitbox shed nearly crashed through my wall.

I’m sympathetic to some of the residents who were on the back end of the lakes.

I just don’t understand how you can drive over a dam to get to your house, see multiple watercourses on the same side as your house, and not get suspicious.

As a reservoir with houses inside of it, it’s kind of unusual[citation neeeded], but that arrangement still looks an awful lot like being on the wrong side of a levee.

Some people are just idiots, but I don’t believe that everyone here believed that their home “was not in a floodplain” and “could not flood”. Many knew it could happen, they just didn’t believe it would happen to them, or they believed that if it did happen, they were the right sort of people to get bailed out by their friends in government.

The ghost of a god is no man.

quote:

Hebert said he’s not sure what can be done to restrict further development in Barker. Because Fort Bend County doesn’t have zoning power, it could try to buy out homes in the reservoir, but that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars; the average value of the 3,000 homes that flooded is $360,000, Hebert said.

And he’s not sure drastic measures are needed. “There were woolly mammoths roaming around the last time that we had rain like this,” he said.

It's not that they didn't think they were in a flood plain, it's that the developers built these homes in an area the government still marked as part of the reservoir. It is also 100% on the government for selling off this land that is 100% part of the reservoir. It's a massive failure

Ed Taravella, a longtime Houston developer, said he hasn’t seen any credible studies showing that development has sent more runoff into the reservoirs. “Things people say are largely anecdotal,” he said.

The government never owned most of the land. The Feds failed to buy it in the 1940s when it was agricultural land and worth mere dollars per acre.

Decades later, the city and county allowed the private property to be subdivided and developed as residential land.

It’s sort of like the Love Canal in that there are several parties who could have stopped or minimized the damage, but :capitalism:.
