Can't go wrong with Boxer, High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me.

If you only listen to one its any one of those three, but my pick is High Violet because there aren't any bad tracks on it and every other is like Core National Repertoire.

Bad Music For Bad People is an unofficial compilation but it's got such a great tracklist and album cover that everyone (but the band themselves) loved it. It's got the early tracks from their Alex Chilton sessions and it's pretty much all bangers. Start from there.

Maybe it's because I'm British, but why that over "Off The Bone"? Is that still hard to come by in the States?

It flows better. New Kind of Kick is second, not the closer. Also it has TV Set which is a badass song. Other than that, yeah - no reason to go for it if you have Off The Bone, especially the pressing with that 3D cover and glasses.

I have both and always find myself playing Bad Music more often than Off the Bone for some reason.

I'm not averse to a covers compilation, they seem to specialise in that (and I know their biggest hit, Red Red Wine, is a cover). But I'm very interested in the Goon Hive Mind take on them.

For what it’s worth, they’re pretty different approaches to heavy metal. The Denner/Shermann guitar style is quite dissimilar to Andy LaRocque’s, and while MF is song-oriented every KD release is a concept album. So if you aren’t into MF you might still like KD or vice versa (as long as the turnoff isn’t King himself).

most of their early records got reshuffled before being released over here, and they had a few songs only on 7", so this is a case where a good compilation of the early years is actually important and useful.

Take those three listed above and add Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy.

possibly controversial take: Tommy's good parts are good but it's underwritten and essentially unfinished, so like a lot of double albums, it's a great single LP with a bunch of stuff that's not.

alternately: just watch the movie instead

The movie sucks. The album is great when taken as a whole but large chunks of it don't work as individual tracks, unlike Quadrophenia which is almost all bangers.

When you want to figure out why they get hyped as the first hard rock band even though their early albums are not hard, you need to hear Live at Leeds too. Not sure if it goes in the top 3 though.

i've always thought leeds was a bit overrated, but i would like to hear the version that's come out more recently that has the entire setlist from that night, I am willing to change my opinion upon getting more than just thirty-odd minutes of the concert

Welp I must be missing something big because I have the exact opposite opinion when it comes to Tommy/Quadrophenia.

And I suspect it was a joke but goddamn guys don't threaten the man with Listzomania either. That'll just put him off life in general.

My bizarre opinions aside I'll second Meaty, Beaty, Big, and Bouncy. Also I don't know what concert it was, but there's a UK special edition CD of Who's Next with one on the second disc and it's pretty nice.

If you're going to go for a compilation, I'd go with the Who Hits 50, which gets you everything on MBBB, but also some later single only stuff like Join Together and Dogs.

I bought the deluxe version on itunes and I think it flows real well. The band's rocking real hard, and they're free without being obscenely jammy like many other acts of the era. The only weird part is doing the entire Tommy and then immediately doing parts of it again for the medley for the LP.

Admittedly I listen to it more as a time capsule of rock music in 1970 and less as a Who album.

This is more of a "where do I go next?", but those requests seem common enough:

Where do I go for RZA's 90s era production/'sound' after listening to GZA's Liquid Swords and RZA's Bobby Digital?

Upon first listen, Liquid Swords was lacking a little energy for me, but Bobby Digital was immediately what I was looking for. Should I follow up any other GZA releases, or just go through the 90s-era Wu Tang discography? I only really heard the popular tracks from Wu Tang Forever back when it was released so it would be new to me.

Similar artists that are RZA inspired without his involvement would work as well, if there are any up that alley.

Thanks for any suggestions to track down!

Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx for RZA production; Mobb Deep’s The Infamous for a similar grimy feeling.

Gza’s Beneath the Surface seems like a logical follow up. Not as good as Liquid Swords imo, but has a sound more similar to Bobby Digital.
You can’t really go too wrong with 90’s Wu-Tang though. If you haven’t heard Enter the 36 Chambers, that’s mandatory. Tical - Method Man, Return to the 36 Chambers - ODB, Ironman - Ghostface Killah or even the first Gravediggaz albums are also good.

So I listened to a bunch of his stuff, including one world extinguisher, and came away loving vocal studies and uprock narratives. His sound is just so great but I can’t get into an album with 33 1:27 songs. gently caress, man, just stick to that groove for a little longer.
