to be fair there are only like 40 aircraft carriers in the world and most of them are going to get either sunk or nuked when WWIII kicks off, which it will when US carriers are getting sunk, and nobody's going to be building new ones for a couple of generations after that if ever

The gift that keeps on giving

https://www.newsweek.com/defense-contractors-benefited-nearly-half-14-trillion-spent-afghan-war-study-1628485

Not surprising most of post 9/11 spending ended up as defense contractor invoices

quote:

The stunning Taliban victory last month in Afghanistan is drawing attention now to even graver consequences: the extent to which the U.S. reliance on contractors may have heightened the difficulties of the Afghan security forces.

Jodi Vittori, a former Air Force lieutenant colonel and scholar of corruption and fragile states at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who was not involved in the study, pointed to the U.S. insistence that the Afghan air force use U.S.-made helicopters. Afghans preferred Russian helicopters, which were easier to fly, could be maintained by Afghans and were suited to rugged Afghanistan.

When U.S. contractors pulled out with U.S. troops this spring and summer, taking their knowledge of how to maintain U.S.-provided aircraft with them, top Afghan leaders bitterly complained to the U.S. that it had deprived them of one essential advantage over the Taliban.

Hartung, like others, also pointed to the corruption engendered by the billions of loosely monitored dollars that the U.S. poured into Afghanistan as one central reason that Afghanistan's U.S.-backed government lost popular support, and Afghan fighters lost morale.

The story is still funny since it's the classic case of US empire grifting overseas.

Setting up occupation forces overseas then convincing the local quisling government they need state of the art complicated US weapon systems to stay in power.

that’s also an important aspect of US military foreign aid - the money has to go to US companies. “foreign aid” is actually domestic

Yeah even funnier was how some investigative journalist managed to get one "magic bomb detector" and it was just a LED wired to the battery on the inside.

It's the only carrier wreck in the world that can be reached with standard diving equipment, max depth of the wreck is 213 ft.

213' is even still pretty deep with standard diving stuff. Might need a special blend to go down that deep so you don't get nitrogen narcosis and do something stupid and die
