Borrovan posted:Not sure myself. Legalistically, ime no civil litigant in the history of earth has every accepted that they ever did anything even a little bit wrong, settlements are always just entered into for pragmatic reasons with no admission of guilt. More practically, all anyone's really gonna pay attention to is the fact that he won, which means he can't have done anything because just world no I won't read the judgment fa lala lala. The "I didn't do anything wrong. It was just easier to write a cheque and reach a settlement" may be legally correct. And a bunch of times, it is the right tactical move to make (unless you have the unlimited resources to fight and defeat all spurious claims*.) But it always makes you look super skeevy. If you are explaining how settling doesn't make you guilty, you're losing. Borrovan posted:
Yeah but only at an innuendo level. This moves it to the stage where everyone can openly refer to Andrew as a man who paid a settlement to a women to close a civil case about sexual trafficking. *= Why one would need a fantastic amount of wealth to do this. Like it's a royal amount of wealth. Edit: This cat has paid a number of settlements to settle cases in civil animal court over the unlawful killing of a number of mice, rabbits, birds, water fowl and baby ducklings. I was not especially enthusiastic when corbyn was promising the same thing to be honest though I would have given him more leeway to not gently caress it up and also it was part of like, a broader set of improvements. If it's just "you have to work the same amount of hours every week" that's not going to solve anything because it's still poo poo work for poo poo money and there still aren't gonna be enough of them each week. Also I have no idea how my job would even work as a regular waged thing so I genuinely expect it would just put me out of work, and unlike corbyn I doubt starmer would give a poo poo about that. There are salaried positions where I work but I wouldn't take them because it just means you're expected to do stupid amounts of work for the same salary. The best thing they could do to improve my security is cutting down on expenses which means tackling housing and bills and poo poo but they aren't gonna do that. Or some other source of income security like a UBI. Or a big pay raise. I'm just not gonna be singing from the rooftops if the solution to life being poo poo is just "more work" OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 15:41 on Sep 14, 2021 |

There is an Irish former TD (the Irish equivalent of an MP) who also makes programmes about trains. Though from what I heard, nobody thinks he is a knobhead in real life. (Politically is another story.)

Random question - do trades unions' legal bods do stuff like landlord/tenant disputes too? I'm assuming it's strictly work stuff. Not that I have any particular specific reason to fear aggro with my landlord, but if anything legal does crop up for me in the near future that's more likely than work so if a TU does do that kind of thing that would be an extra reason for me to join.

Some of the general trade unions offer non-work help for certain things. Contact yours and ask if you're interested.

Unionline (GMB/CWU/a few smaller unions) offer advice on landlord disputes for free but won't represent you (i.e. write letters, take the landlord to court, send Fingers and Lenny round to break his legs if he doesn't give back your deposit) for free. They *do* offer discounted representation for members though.

Granny reminiscences: When I lived in Egypt, if you used less than a certain amount of electricity in a month (as most of the poorer people did without air conditioning or heating - icy cold in winter but I digress) you paid a lower price per unit but if you used over that you paid a higher rate per unit on ALL your electricity. So that sort of covered that aspect. I don't know if they still do that because they took an IMF loan and some of the conditions were removal of various subsidies.

One of the most depresing things in my life was when I was working a lovely zero hours stocktaking job I spoke with someone who had worked for the company for 13 years. They told me how when they started at the company there were pay scales based on distance traveled to work, garanteed hours and all kinds of benefits and everything had just slowly gotten worse or been stripped away. For context the system I worked under was that if you had to travel more than 200 miles (one way) you were entitled to a £5 travel bonus. One time we went to a job 198 miles away and didn't qualify. I also found out that they had decided to send us to south Wales from Kent to count a B&Q while another team from South Wales was sent the same day to count another B&Q in ... kent. Apparently this was decided because they though we might call our friends and rob the B&Q if we worked locally. So yeah Zero hours loving sucks good job starmer for providing a sliver of a reason to vote Labour for a change, shame about literally everything else.
