Basically, it comes down to the fact that, French built Australian subs were designed for defense and they need nuclear propulsion to reach the SCS. The question is why should the average Australian care about spending billions on a project aimed at their largest trade partner because the Pentagon didn’t want to pay for it?

(Also, the Chinese are rapidly expanding their fleet with still really pretty limited economic effort at 1.3% of gdp. What would happen if they actually tried?)

China is the largest exporter to the US, Australia, and UK(as of this Summer). I guess their plan is to freeze out China and effectively sanction themselves into privation and chaos. UK already hosed up their supply chains with Brexit, why not double down. Alienating France at a sensitive time is an unexpected bonus lol.

China is already turning on additional screws on Australia after lobster/coal/wine/education industry, check how the iron ore price drop back to near pre covid price after China announced new iron restriction.

Wait, what clown thinks the EU should play "a key role" in security in the Indo-Pacific region? Are the French going to sing Ode to Joy next time they sink a Greenpeace ship in New Zeeland?

gradenko_2000 posted:

the Aussies had already spent some 2 billion on a nuclear sub program in collaboration with the French

apparently the AUS gov't has trashed all that after Biden offered US help with nucs

Lol. DCNS must be pissed.

Stringent posted:

that's a very western centric and naive read of the situation imo.

the correct reasoning is probably something more along the lines that japan and sk would probably have declined membership if offered. they both have a very long history with china and i'm pretty confident that the presiding sentiment in japan at least is that the ongoing western dominance of asia at the expense of china is not in any way a foregone conclusion, and the consequences of picking the wrong team will be far more immediate for japan or sk than they would be for aus, much less the us or the uk.

If it's mostly about submarines I can see it. Both Japan and SK take industrial policy more serious than any of those other jokers.

Arguably, China still needs to expand its fleet if AUKUS actually is intending to try to cut their supply lines, but China’s economy is already so large they can do it that easily. The West couldn’t compete with them at all if they made an real effort.

Also the whole point of military spending is make the other guy waste a larger portion of their economy on dead weight than you do.

if China starts spending lots of money of military expansion then they're going to bankrupt themselves doing it and the whole thing will collapse just like what happened with the USSR!

Really does look like boring MIC grift and a doubling down on the Racist White Apartheid Countries Alliance.

This feels really half baked, like basically a ploy to station US subs in Australia and then gently caress around for a decade not delivering on a super expensive weapons program that we're going to dupe them into sharing costs on. I really wonder how mutual this all was and when/where it was cooked up.

Arguably, the reserve situation is more likely at this point especially considering the amount of bloat in Western militaries.

Also, e PRC’s economy in PPP is already significantly larger than AUKUS.

mearsheimer is a weirdo because his whole approach is to explain all the ruthless stuff that the U.S. is going to do to grind your country into bonemeal, and then when called on it, says "i'm not saying that's good, i'm just saying that's what's going to happen, i'm just a structuralist!" it's very strange.
