If you read the article it's clear it's only if they get ranked choice instead of PR.

So basically reform only if it benefits the Liberals.

I'm not convinced ranked choice would benefit the Liberals the most. The NDP is the #1 second choice for almost all other parties' supporters.

It's also not true in the long term. The political landscape already changes over time, and would definitely shift drastically in reaction to going ranked choice.

I love the actual quote

Under Stephen Harper, there were so many people unhappy with the government and their approach that people were saying, ‘It will take electoral reform to no longer have a government we don’t like’. But under the current system, they now have a government they’re more satisfied with and the motivation to change the electoral system is less compelling

A guy I worked with voted for the PPC because while he justifiably hates the libs/cons he's had so much smoke blown up his rear end about communism, socialists and anything left that choosing the NDP was never an option. He also had no idea they were the loving white supremacist party and when pressed about that just said "they're not gonna win anyway so don't worry about it!"

We're hosed. Too many people have been mislead and under-educated for too long to do anything but arrive at the worst choices. There's not going to be a way out without incomprehensible amounts of blood.

True we have a two-party duopoly but ranked choice voting tends to keep them both more or less aligned with the centre or at least pretending to be centrist. Seems like your two parties are trending that way already (sort of.. legal weed what?) but ranked choice would probably boost NDP’s seats in parliament.

This is what I think as well, you'll have less seats that went CON because of vote splitting and a greater willingness to take a risk; in Canada since the NDP is a fairly large party with mainstream support as third parties go it could benefit a lot from ranked choice/alternative vote.

I'd still prefer STV but any system is better than FPTP.

The Sun seems to be giving a wink to conspiracy fans and the PPC crowd with the article title today "If Trudeau pulls off a win, expect a bigger push to 'reset' Canada".

It's referencing "The Great Reset" conspiracy but there's nothing in the article about that. It's just a few paragraphs saying that Trudeau has a huge ego and wants to remake Canada in his image. The last few lines say that if Trudeau has some sort of centrally planning in mind and will implement it if he wins.

I have to think that the thing that's really driving the PPC vote is the anti-vax / anti lockdowns crowd.

The CPC is kind of in the same tough position as the Republican party down in the states. They have to outwardly support having people vaccinated and show that they will be taking responsible steps to curtail the spread of COVID, but 5-10% of their base thinks the needle is going to kill or sterilize them, or that the lockdowns are a plot to have everyone lose their jobs so they all become debt slaves to the banks..

The PPC kind of got handed a golden goose this election and they've been making some hay out of the situation.

Also just like the Republicans, the Conservatives are also slowly alienating rational voters with their weird resistance to saying wether or not all their candidates and MPs have been vaccinated or not like the Liberals and NDP have announced. Like how the Republican recall effort in California blew up when people started to learn exactly who Larry Elder was and it horrified them.

Got any deathsticks?
With parents scrambling to find COVID-19 testing appointments for their children in the capital this weekend, Ottawa's COVID-19 Testing Taskforce says more appointments for children will open up at the Brewer Arena as staffing levels increase.

https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/ottawa-parents-scramble-for-covid-19-testing-appointments-1.5590957

Testing rates slowed to a crawl over the summer, testing sites shut down due to lower rates, now parents complain that they can't get test fast enough for their kids with school going on.

Something about this seems like it could have been avoidable I dunno.

A masterclass in framing "equal weight to smaller parties" as "unfair weight to smaller parties". It's not fair if the representation is equally weighted!

Just want to clear up that this is conflating different things. Ranked choice is just a type of voting, it is not a system in itself.
I believe what Trudeau wants is IRV, which is technically a form of STV.

I'm pretty sure when you say STV you're referring to the one where it's multi-member ridings right? I'd be good with that system also as it's decently proportional.

I dunno, voting system naming is a mess.
