Destroying the human rights act so the tories can go back to treating the rest of humanity as disposable serfs has always been the goal, honestly just surprised it took this long.

we have a shortage of skills in the rental sector of the economy; only 4% of the population are landlords, it's a great growth opportunity which could be booming right now. this is why the australian-style points system is good - it permits those with useful, needed, and socially-productive skills to work for the good of the country.

although obviously there are questions of social justice and imperialism here - is it right to deprive other nations of their landlords?

In 'fairness', there's a rapidly declining number of Bengali residents in the Spitalfields area. Partly because property developers have been regenerating every building they can find, obliterating the social housing stock around there. And partly because the people moving in over the last 3-4 years have been French (and let's face it, no-one wants to live in a French ghetto). The West side of Tower Hamlets is in the process of being made unviable for families because the number of school children in the area have reduced to the point where schools are unsustainable - a few have closed in the last couple of years; others are combining/becoming federations because it's the only way to stay open the Tory rebalancing of the funding formula for schools is also playing a part here. And once the schools close, you won't get them back, because a local authority can't afford to open a school in that area when property prices area so astronomical.

Tower Hamlets council are just sort of sitting there saying "Yo, it's not illegal, bro" while a bunch of utterly obnoxious arseholes roll out plans to turn one of the most famous parts of the borough into a loving outlet village.
John Biggs can go gently caress himself, and die in the process.

KartooshFace, you are not responding efficiently!

I think this article might be the perfect summary of why the current energy supply system is totally crazy - and the consumer protection built in to curb the excesses of capitalism just makes it even more ridiculous.

You have the Big 6 (is it still 6?) suppliers, and then a load of little ones, but apparently the little ones are too little to ride out spikes in energy prices and go bust. And as I think most people know, when that happens your supply gets taken over by another (bigger) company.

But this bit

quote:

Industry rules mean supplies will continue for affected customers, and they will not lose money owed to them.

The new company is also responsible for taking on any credit balances the customer may have.

But paying that credit out to customers is a further disincentive for companies to take on new business.

is funny. "Here are some new customers for you... and here's the debt you now owe them". Obviously this is "consumer friendly", making it less likely people will be demanding renationalisation with menaces, but it's hilariously un-market. The hyper-libertarian version where the supplier goes bust, your energy is cut off until you sign up with a new one (at a much higher price), and you kiss your credit balance bye bye, would at least be consistent.

Anything to keep up the illusion that a market for energy isn't pointless choice-theatre I guess.

Plusnet is, iirc, a BT reseller. So same network but maybe slightly better customer service. TalkTalk are fine until it goes wrong and then their customer service is pretty bad. No experience with Sky, but I'm with BT and I've had decent enough internet and customer service, even when a lightning storm messed up my router. Got it fixed in just over 24 hours including replacing the line to the house, new router, etc.

Sky are terrible the moment anything goes wrong and then it’s all BT’s fault and it will get fixed when it gets fixed sorry BT don’t give us a timeframe.

With vodaphone for both mobile and router internet now, exact same speeds as you would get with any other supplier and they don’t charge you line rental. The app has a function where you can turn the internet off on a timer which stops the half hour of video games at 9 turning into the oh poo poo it’s 3 am thing.

Don't accept any offers from Virgin. They offered me 200mb broadband for the price of 50mb (£22.50) for 18 months when I moved and tried to cancel the old contract.

When the first bill arrived, they charged me £70 and hadn't applied any of the discounts they promised. Over the next month and 2 or 3 calls a week they applied enough discounts to bring it down to about £40, but every time I called asking them to bring it down to the price they promised, they would promise to 'pass it on to a manager, wait 7 days for the account to refresh online.' I'd wait the 7 days and the account would not be applied.

To be fair everyone I spoke to was polite and tried to help but it just kept hitting the wall of them agreeing that I had been promised that contract at £22, i should be getting the extra discount, but every time I tried to get them to apply it, it went off to a manager and then wasn't applied.

Eventually after 6 months I threatened to leave, and they tried the 'pass onto a manager' thing again but I had enough. Managed to talk to someone who was able to take my connection down to 50mb so I could have the £22 internet I was promised. I don't give a poo poo about connection speeds, I just want to not be paying £70 a loving month.

lmao you weren't kidding - quake 3's source code:

code:
float Q_rsqrt( float number )
{
	long i;
	float x2, y;
	const float threehalfs = 1.5F;

	x2 = number * 0.5F;
	y  = number;
	i  = * ( long * ) &y;                       // evil floating point bit level hacking
	i  = 0x5f3759df - ( i >> 1 );               // what the gently caress?
	y  = * ( float * ) &i;
	y  = y * ( threehalfs - ( x2 * y * y ) );   // 1st iteration
//	y  = y * ( threehalfs - ( x2 * y * y ) );   // 2nd iteration, this can be removed

	return y;
}

Suppose it depends if you have a dedicated line nowadays, and not have a concurrency level.
We only have BT in our area in NI, and they had a concurrency level of about 50 houses or so, all sharing the one line.
It was fine for a long while, but from 5pm-9pm you couldn't stream poo poo or play games.

Oh!

I have a good one and it’s one where the little guy wins

Years and years ago I had to cancel two different mobile broadband contracts to consolidate with vodaphone - at the time getting them separately was cheaper. I did it all right, they stopped taking money and that was done with.

4 years ago this Lowell company started sending me demand notices for hundreds of pounds on behalf of 02. I told them to gently caress off and it went to the mediation stage via phone call with the court, in the end they agreed that it was probably a billing error and as it hadn’t been thrown back to O2 for any evidence whatsoever they couldn’t prove I owed the money, we agreed that I would pay a pound as a goodwill gesture and that was that.

Few months ago these motherfuckers try and bill me hundreds of pounds for the 3 mobile contract, again I told them to gently caress off and check your records, oh and by the way we now know there was a problem at that time with all mobile companies where if you didn’t request and use a PAC code then billing would continue, and I’ll see you in court *again*.

What do you know, they immediately caved. always fight these scumbags, even if you are in the wrong you can get them to compromise in mediation and they are absolutely banking on not having to do any work other than get it rubber stamped by a judge. Make it *cost* them and they will think twice about scamming you again.
