I watched a couple of the New Blood guys stream Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi a while back. It seems very odd and wonky and impenetrable but also kinda charming in its overambitious lowpoly horrorjank. The developer went on to bigger and better things, and by that I mean they made Drake of the 99 Dragons.

I'll also replay Deathkings of the Dark Citadel with Mage, just to see.

It makes an enormous difference, especially if you play as the mage, whose poo poo fallback weapon is a range attack

I started playing Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi yesterday and I'm hooked. Has anyone messed with it? It's really rough around the edges but the core loop is interesting. You rescue people (escort missions :allears:) from a semi randomly generated vampire castle using holy powers and some Battlegrounds style weapons (its supposed to be very early 20th century). The atmosphere is really good. The physics are really bad though: If you walk over curved surfaces you get yeeted into the ceiling, doors will gib you, etc.

RIYL: Eldritch, Blood, Amnesia.

I loving love Nosferatu, though I never quite finished it (I got to the very last area and had to switch computers and never got back to it). It is ugly and jank as gently caress but it kinda works. I would love to see a spiritual successor (maybe about a mummy instead? I dunno, I like the idea of randomly generated Egyptian tombs).

Nosferatu: WoM is pretty great. I don't know if the Architectural Generation Engine is derivative of something else or built from the ground up but it has that idtech 3 charm. There are so many points where the game could potentially become unbearably frustrating with game-breaking bugs, especially with escorting janky AI through a procedurally generated castle, but surprisingly it seems to work most of the time and the bugs you tend to encounter give the game character instead.

Witch Hunt is an entirely unrelated game that gives me a lot of the same vibes and has a similar sort of charm. It also has procedurally generated levels but with wide-open landscapes, and it plays a lot like a spooky take on the Deer Hunter series. It can be legitimately unnerving at times.

edit; i'm sorry but i have to... Nosferatu: :wom:

i can attest to nosferatu being a solid enough game. if you're willing to put up with variable amounts of jank then it's a fun enough experience. i don't think it gets brought up much, but, a lot of that is mainly because it's such an odd experience and on the surface it might not sound like the most engaging idea.

I've been playing Soldier of Fortune thanks to some of the posts itt, and it's a blast. Its shotgun sounds like every 80s action movie shotgun and I can't believe other games haven't lifted that sample. I just got the HMG which just might be one of the most effective all-round weapons in any shooter, laughably tiny 40-round magazine notwithstanding. I do wish you could just carry every gun at once, instead of having to fiddle with your slots tho.

I think SoF+ lets you enable unlimited weapons?

The custom difficulty option in the base game will let you have unlimited inventory.

You may need to restart with new custom settings, and then cheat to change map if thar ever was an option.

Alternatively, check of there is anything in the .ini you can change. I know this works in SoF2, but that's written in the Q3 engine.

Also, update on SoF2: about a third in, and it's fun but really overplays it's hand from time to time. Will write more later.

I’m curious about your thoughts on SoF2. I remember it took itself way too seriously, the enemies having laser aim, and terrible early 2000s “stealth” sections. I got so discouraged I remember giving up and never finishing it.

That said I’m so tempted to buy both of these games and give it another go.

It's one of my favourite shooters of all time (easily in the top 20) no joke. SoF2 at the other hand... eeeh. Tried to go too much for realism and the shooting was weird, plus forced stealth sections with insta-fail. It had some cool stuff for sure.

If SOF2 had come out a few years later they could've just cribbed the Call of Duty formula.

It does come close to it in a few spots, most notably the Colombia section where you have to escort a group of AI marines.

God the bit with the bridge and the village was loving miserable. The airport levels later made up for it though. You can cheat in guns at the start of the airport section and blast an NPC's head off and then the subsequent cutscene plays out with his silent, dead body splattered on the floor while John and friend look on earnestly

Sometimes shooters can feel weird. SOF1 feels GREAT to play (aside from just being a superior game) but I distinctly remember SOF2 felt like I was shooting...through?? the enemies? If that makes sense. There was this real lack of any kind of satisfaction or feedback.

Nu-MK crosses the line from campy to gross imo (laugh at me if you must) but I think if they kept it stylized and leaned into the 90s schlock tonally again SOF4 could be OK. I’m not sure how it could distinguish itself gameplay-wise though.

I play MK11 on and off and I tend agree with you, but in a case by case basis. It seems to vary wildly on the fatality, some of them are just nasty and unpleasant whereas some of them are dumb or funny enough that it winds up balancing out. There are definitely times where it's like "okay guys chill out a bit".

The weird thing to me is that nobody knows they're licensed until it gets brought up, and "Soldier of Fortune" strikes me as such a generic term that I find it hard to understand why they couldn't, actually, use it as a name for games, but I'm not an entertainment lawyer so gently caress do I know. I always thought it'd make sense to reboot it as a Call of Duty spin-off or something.

It's not a spin-off, it's part of the main Call of Duty series.

What helps the original SoF is

1) it was made in that late 90s-pre 9/11 period where it was ok to be violent and over the top

2) it’s mostly a check list of “80s/90s bad guys” including neo -Nazis, Saddam Hussein, and Anime Ninjas - I mean the big bad is basically Cobra Commander

3) I haven’t played it in years, but again since it was pre-9/11 I don’t remember a lot of “rar rar America gently caress yea”.

If SoF got re-made today it would be…not good. Especially in today’s political atmosphere

IIRC SoF Payback was originally a ValuSoft budget-price FPS called "Mercenaries Wanted", developed by the Slovakian studio that made Chaser (and a heap of Cabela's licensed games). For reasons never quite explained or understood, Acti decided at the very last minute to promote it to a full-priced release bearing the name of one of their older, deader franchises.
