bug talk: i remember riding through the great dismal swamp as a kid and i thought it was raining and my dad told me "lol that's bugs hitting the windshield"

i haven't been through there in many years, i'd imagine Things Done Changed

but really, let's be loving optimistic here, right? any humans that survive will live in a world without mosquitoes or chiggers

you ever have chiggers? it's a loving nightmare, dude. there can be like 10 or 20, or hundreds of them. they bite you and it injects an enzyme that digests your skin so the little boi can eat you which keeps working even after you wash them off, and it takes days to painfully heal while rednecks tell you to put clear fingernail polish on it to "suffocate the bug that burrowed into your skin" which is absolutely 100% bullshit i loving hate this country.

the whole climate change thing is like realizing i'm covered in chiggers and it's too late even if i wash them off.

but i've been thinking. hey. multicellular life will survive, right? maybe it's a possibility that we could set up large containers of various plant seeds in satellites with timed releases. probably have some high tech AI running the satellites in a network so....wait this is skynet isn't it? i'm inventing skynet in my head, aren't i? politicians will put nukes in the satellites along with the seeds for some stupid loving reason and they're be like "terrible news, everyone. the seed satellites have decided to drop the nukes. RIP we tried. don't forget you can still vote!"

tl;dr bugs gone, maybe good? seeds maybe, terminator yes

I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to Antz, Bee Movie and uh A Bug's Life?

It'll be like Wall-E but also Up.

there's some intangible irony or something in people only noticing that we killed all the bugs because they're no longer killing lots of bugs with their cars.

A big thing I notice is how few I hear.

Growing up I was always hearing crickets or cicadas or frogs - just all kinds of critters. Now it shocks me when I hear them. Like I went on a walk and heard a cricket and my partner was all "what in the world?"

Earlier this year I was walking by a wetland preserve spot and heard this

It had been so long since I had really heard frogs that I had to record it. I felt incredibly happy in that moment.

sad note though: gonna take a while guess that the heatwave and 3 month drought probably murdered all those frogs and their offspring.

Apparently you'll never go wrong predicting sooner rather than later. In 2014 I went to a seminar designed to bring non-specialists up to speed on the latest anthropogenic climate change thinking. The presenter's main messages were 1) It's Happening!, 2) Humanity is doing it, and 3) It will be obvious by 2027. By 2017 his landmarks had been reached.

One thing he said stuck with me. More energy in the atmosphere -> more moisture -> more weather. What exactly that means is very difficult to predict, so beware of models. In 2014 we were looking at increased precipitation on the west coast, but no indication of this summer drought / cluster rain in the winter thing. 120% annual precipitation doesn't do much except wash landscape into the ocean if it all falls in three days.

I remember when I first moved to Kansas in 2003, during the summer there were toads everywhere, but by around 2009 you just didn't see them anymore. I remember it because apparently I was the only person who wasn't afraid to pick up a toad that had somehow made it into the break room and take it back outside.
