HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE DEAD, MOTHERFUCKER?

Lop and Ocho has a lightsaber but its not about the Jedi, thats one of the things I liked about it. They were entrusted with a lightsaber however many centuries ago but otherwise are just a bunch of force insensitive locals. It was really gorgeous. The bit with lop floating on her umbrella after wrecking her speeder made me think of old 80s anime I'd see on scifi for some reason. Very nostaglic shot.

Agreed, but Appleseed was created by Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell).

I'm assuming by "own stuff" you were implying that Appleseed was an original creation by Aramaki. Aramaki just directed the CG films, but the manga was all Shirow.

I'll be honest the only stuff I really know about Shirow is he created Ghost in the Shell, Tank Police and a metric fuckton of porn. I thought Appleseed was Aramaki's creation.

Today you learned! :)

More relevant to the thread, I finished the last Visions episode. Big meh but overall? It's a decent anthology. The Village Bride, Lop & Ocho, and The Ninth Jedi are my favorites. I'd love manga continuations of each. Or anime series. Or feature films. Whichever. :allears:

Really interesting in seeing how all over the place everyone’s rankings are. Here are mine:

Top 3 that I’d love to see a full series for:
The Ninth Jedi
Lop and Ocho
The Duel

Not too shabby, I appreciate what they were going for:
T0-B1
Akakiri
Tatooine Rhapsody

And the rest:
The Twins
The Elder
The Village Bride

I think I’m one of the only people to be lukewarm on The Elder. For me it felt too pedestrian, pretty by the numbers especially compared to most everything else here.

I love Lop. I forget what her race is but I recall them from the old EU so I hope this is a sign they’ll be back in canon.

The Village Bride is probably the only one I didn’t like at all. It felt less like a self-contained story and more like a scene in the middle of one. I had no idea what the Jedi woman’s deal was or her relationship with her companion and the villains were total pushovers against them.

I thought it was straight forward enough. The woman is a Jedi on the run from the empire who was responding to a call from the bucket head guy. She and bucket head guy have some history together—we learn they share a mutual friend in the Jedi lady's master. Coincidentally, the lady's master was also a native of the planet they've ventured onto, where we see the locals are in tune with "Magina" which is something spiritual like The Force. We also learn the planet has been stripped of all its resources because of The Clone War.

The Jedi lady appears to be coping with what happened during The Clone Wars by completely hiding herself and doesn't want to get involved with the villagers' plight for obvious reasons. Bucket head guy clearly is egging her on to kick some rear end, but more importantly, he also is trying to help her to come out of hiding and to sort of honor the memory of her master by saving the village (and the planet) from further exploitation.

You can argue the villains were pushovers because they're basically just local gangsters who got ahold of crappy old battle droids left behind by the Separatists.

Yeah what the hell, Lop and Ocho was easily my second favorite short. The found family theme is great and works significantly better here than it did in TROS lmao. It's also one of the best looking episodes imo. The Duel is going to get a lot of praise, and it makes for a strong opening to the anthology, but there's very little to it outside of the saber reveal and Kurosawa aesthetic imo. The Village Bride has best depiction of "Jedi in hiding" coupled with easily the best scoring of the anthology—the music is so good in that episode.

Speaking of not keeping up with the series has there been a more brutal death than that one dude burning to death in the Ninth Jedi?

Nothing comes to mind, as deaths in Star Wars mainly come from exploding ships, laser shots, or a quick stab or cut from a lightsaber. That being said, although it's not the first time we've seen a full body cut, I was still surprised when that little blue Sith dude got sliced right in half at the very start of the fight. I thought it was a nice touch with Juro's cape covering him just as his entire top half started to slide off like a piece of freshly sliced deli meat.

A quick question that sprang to mind while doing a rewatch - why did that one guy burn? Was that a massive kyber crystal, and did it kill him because he was from the dark side?

He’s decent in Stranger Things and Black Widow. He could be a good character actor if his agent was pickier.

He’s a terrible choice for voice acting though, a lot of his appeal is in his exasperated expressions and body language. His voice is pretty average.

I'm just saying if you want a gravelly voiced dude who has a lot of experience voice acting and was in a good Hellboy movie just go with Ron Perlman. He's already done a Star War when he played that Trandoshan who got shanked by Grievous.

Are we sure that Studio Trigger isn't just taking the piss here? I wouldn't put it past them to go "let's take this opportunity to make exactly what people would expect when they hear the words Star Wars Anime, and then make it even more over the top bugfuck nonsense." Neil Patrick Harris is trying to sound like Steve Staley and Alison Brie is just screaming the whole time, half the dialogue is exposition and the other half is loud declarations, the animation flip flops between early 2000s flash cartoons and epileptic seizure episodes, the droid is the only one that needs a helmet in space. The whole thing has to be a joke.

I'd chalk it up as a misfire if I didn't think they made it stupid on purpose. I think I liked it more than Tatooine Rhapsody. That felt like a missed chance while this gave me the same "what the gently caress is this screw it I'm turning my brain off and watching a trainwreck" mindset I felt watching The Rise of Skywalker.

... have you watched many Studio Trigger series'? Because they fukkin love going balls-out nuts when they have the opportunity. Twins was 100% them just saying gently caress it and having as much fun as possible because they get to do a Star Wars short completely on their own terms.

Oh I'm aware of the lunatics at Trigger. I'm just not quite sure if they're being intentionally stupid, sincerely enthusiastic and going hog wild, trolling their audience with whiplash between low and high effort, or everything in between.

I'm angling for the last one, tbh. The whole short felt like they were saying "lol this is what you get."
