Sometimes a quote sticks with you. There's a quick bit in "Way of the Gun" where Ryan Phillipe asks Benicio Del Toro "what do you think?" And Del Toro responds "I think a plan is just a list of things that don't happen." And I think about that quote constantly.

Edit realized you were talking about the first person not the Greek quoter.

I don't recall that quote. The one I remember and think about is between Del Toro and Caan. Something like "kids these days, it's like they want to be criminals more than they wanna do crime."

It's not that Super Mario was miscast, it's that Chris Prat is a very outspoken member of an anti-LGBT church and donates a great deal of his money to Trumpers and Right Wing super PACs

e: As in he says he goes to that church very openly, i realized the phrasing on this is a bit weird.

It's also that weird thing nerds do we're they're incapable of seeing the actors past their previous roles or professions. He's not going to go in and do a superhero voice or whatever Pratt is usually known for, he's an actor. He can probably do a fine Mario.

I don't think anyone's concerned about Chris Pratt doing a poor job, just that he's a huge homophobic rear end in a top hat (like Boba Pearl mentioned), and a lot of people don't want to support his films anymore, which seems reasonable.

I'm mostly objecting to it because he's a huge homophobic rear end in a top hat, but also I don't think he's going to do a very good job. He hasn't shown a lot of range (and even if he does, it's clearly not what big movies want from him), and what little range he has shown doesn't fit for any interpretation of Mario I can imagine. Everyone else I can picture it working (yes, including Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong), but a Pratt Mario... no.

I think people also have a fondness for Charles Martinet, who seems like a very warm and charming guy from what little I know about him. I doubt many people think that Mario is a role that requires unique and majestic talents.

am i mad because i wrote a comment about it? i don't understand.

i do believe that in an entertainment industry where crew are worked to exhaustion, ptsd and death and are taking industrial action to push against this, the non-baby contingent of people looking forward to a two hour animated mario movie can afford to boycott over their valid objection to a homophobic actor.

i also think if they're interested at all in that kind of activism they should look at that bigger industrial picture and maybe show some solidarity that way too.

Have you considered that people can care about multiple things at once, such that they can be disappointed that a rampant homophobe has yet another role while still caring about at least one other thing (e.g. the treatment of people in the entertainment industry)? People aren't going to constantly post about every single thing they care about; this isn't a particularly poignant soapbox to take about the entertainment industry as a whole.

maybe you're right, and the link in stronger in my mind than anyone else's. it's just it's my industry and working conditions are hosed, and i see a lot of individuals getting "cancelled" or equivalent, rightly, but very little of the companies that exploit and hurt thousands of workers getting that same public ire. maybe that's changing, but it still feels like people turn a blind eye because they like the products of those labor practices.

anyway sorry for the derail from funny tweets.

yeah for sure, but "Jack Black as Bowser" and "Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong" is genius stunt casting, while "Christ Pratt as Mario" is bafflingly bland in comparison.

That's fair; I'm also shading your posts with a trend of people attacking grievances by implying that the aggrieved don't care about a broader picture. Personally, I think the entertainment industry is massively exploitative, but that's (sadly) not new and also not specific to this movie, so I wouldn't bring it up if I was bemoaning Pratt as Mario.

I think a spreadsheet probably limited the casting to top tier leading men for the lead role, which pretty much limits them to bland, unsuitable people. I dunno, I don't know much about Chris Pratt but whenever there's a seemingly terrible filmmaking descision it's usually because of money
