And also greatly reduced my hamburger intake. I still eat chicken, though, the fuckers.

spacetoaster posted:Chickens would absolutely kill/eat humans if they were any bigger. Mister Speaker posted:chickens are bros These are both true. My parents raised broilers for a few years. They'd raise a backyard flock of about 30 that would roam the property during the day. They were goofy, endearing birds, and took to following our golden retriever around for reasons I'm not really clear on. But yeah, they'd try to eat drat near anything. It was always sad when it came time to slaughter them, but at least we had given them the best life we could. Plus, broilers will suffer from cardiovascular or skeletal problems if they live much past their slaughter date. though that's because we've bred them that way, so

EoinCannon posted:Without checking, I think it's chicken raised for meat its a big rear end breed of chicken designed to grown giant meaty parts to maximize sales. i dunno why its called a broiler... i guess because its intended for eatin' and that was popular method or available as a breed name at some time [edit]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broiler its just a generic name for a human created breed designed for meat production. ======================== Due to extensive breeding selection for rapid early growth and the husbandry used to sustain this, broilers are susceptible to several welfare concerns, particularly skeletal malformation and dysfunction, skin and eye lesions and congestive heart conditions. Management of ventilation, housing, stocking density and in-house procedures must be evaluated regularly to support good welfare of the flock. The breeding stock (broiler-breeders) do grow to maturity but also have their own welfare concerns related to the frustration of a high feeding motivation and beak trimming. Broilers are usually grown as mixed-sex flocks in large sheds under intensive conditions. ======================== yum

Memento posted:are the chickens named after the preferred method of cooking? That's kind of macabre Not specifically, it's just to differentiate the meat breeds from the laying breeds. And it is a bit macabre, but I suppose if you're going to eat meat, the least you can do is own up to the fact you've bred an animal for slaughter. But since I lost track of which thread I was in and got into animal husbandry in the blessed pics thread, here's my dumbass cat chilling in my euphonium case:
