Setting up a Pi is a pretty easy way to get back into it. I don't like the actual crash videos as much but the idiot driver ones are often really entertaining and there's a lot of people on YouTube that make big compilations of them

Yeah, I think a Pi is on my list of poo poo to order next month. The commercials are just ridiculous on youtube now and I'm not paying $10~/mo to not have them. I wonder what kind of effect it will have on Sling.

The crash videos are fine to me, for some reason. It's the road rage poo poo I can not watch. Most of the channels I watch don't show death videos. One a year or two ago, weirdly, ended in a gang shooting on the side of an interstate. But poo poo like drunk drivers launching their vehicles in ditches and instant karma via cop stuff, all day.

I'd seen one of my old neighbors turn up in one (as the asshat) in the Springs. Dude was a douche, but it was just him cutting someone off, which is like, the most boring thing ever on dashcam.

You could use the NewPipe client instead of the youtube app on an android phone too. It's got trouble importing your subscriptions to channels but everything else works, and no ads to be seen.

I watch a lot of youtube over my xbox, only on the phone when linked to it in a thread or briefly to show something to someone or link something. Having a pi will be a dramatic improvement all around, but newpipe would be good for those rare occasions. Thanks for the heads up.

I pay $11 for YouTube because I can close the app and it will keep playing. It turned into the selling point when I let my subscription lapse. They introduced Picture in Picture recently so you can still watch whatever it is youre watching while doing other things on your mobile device.

I am on YouTube more than I am on any streaming service like Netflix, and I’m sure a lot of people are the same way but justify not paying for YouTube (while still paying more for something they use less).

All of those features are built into iOS and you can do them in pretty much any other app. For example, you can pip youtube so long as you launch the video from awful instead of inside the browser.

Google has deliberately hamstrung youtube in the browser in order to force people into the app. I do not deny those features are great. I'm just saying that they aren't unique to the youtube app and instead are just google's way of making you pay for built in apple functionality. Facebook has something similar where their website doesn't work entirely in the mobile browser including messages so that they can force people to use their apps that make tracking you and showing ads easier for them.

Nothing is going to happen to Flynn. Dude is slowly going to turn into a fox correspondent ala Ollie North.

I used to not mind the commercials, when it was one every third video. Now it's 2 unskippable commercials before each video, every 4 minutes in the video, and a bonus one or two at the end if you let the video run through completely. If it wasn't so riddled with ads, I wouldn't be looking into a pi.

I tend to watch youtube and sling fairly equally. Sling is more background noise and familiarity, but good for the price. YoutubeTV is $30 more a month with just as meh a line up. Everyone starting their own streaming networks is ruining "cable" style programming anyhow.

Cool, but I don’t want to have to launch the awful app every time I do pip.

And I have an Apple TV, Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, and a MacBook. I know what iOS does. And it’s still worth the $11.

the joke here is that I am willing to overpay for things — but if you use YouTube more than Netflix or similar and justify paying for that but not YouTube, then I don’t think we will ever agree anyway

I already pay google for phone service, which is probably how my mental gymnastics are fine with it.

If the ads weren't literally to the point of interrupting music videos (with ads for their music service), I'd be fine with letting them run. Capitalism ruins everything though, and the algorithms won't be happy until you see two minutes of commercials for every minute of content, or pay a monthly fee. And then they'll demonetize the channel through some sleight bullshit.

Nah I don't use youtube for much. I don't even have an account I log into so I can't watch anything labeled as 'explicit.'

I just pull up music videos from time to time on my desktop. I agree with you that if you use it it's worth paying for. It just sucks that google forces people to pay for built in features they deliberate cripple.

I have a friend like that and anytime I go to her apartment and watch anything on her tv it’s just a test of patience since I haven’t really seen an ad in several years.

I use Firefox on my phone with an ad blocker. You full screen the window then hit the home button and it PIPs it. Then can push it to the side so only a slice of the video is visible as you use your phone for whatever while it plays. It also keeps the awful political ads from playing. I was catching LOTS of nra ads because of forgotten weapons i think. It also means you can have music on YouTube play in the background again

Our deadline isn't until mid-October but I'm already hearing muttering in the halls about 'this is unconstitutional / my First Amendment / they can't decide what my religious beliefs are'. Since they're all Fed contractors they literally can't find another job in their current field where they won't face the exact same requirements.
