Enjoy!

I was hoping to make Cold Waves an annual tradition while I work for a Chicago-based company and they pay for my airfare and board ... but I'm a dirty Canadian and my vax combo isn't recognised by the states.

Seeing PWEI play there is one of my all-time greatest memories.

The new Noise Unit came out yesterday. Only listened to it once but it feels like a stealth FLA release. None of the songs are as good as Unknown from Mechanical Soul but it sure seemed to have more points of interest.

Possibly more exciting - they’re remastering & re-releasing nearly all of the pre-pop Delerium albums.

I really like the new Noise Unit album. It seems like they're just paring off a whole bunch of ideas from FLA's more recent albums and merging it with sort of an older-school FLA sound.

In other FLA news, apparently they got kicked off the Ministry tour without being notified. They found out via social media and don't seem to be too happy about it! The tour itself has been pushed back 6 months due to COVID-19 concerns, and my location is one of those that got refunded rather than rescheduled, which I guess I'm fine with!

The new openers are the Melvins and Corrosion of Conformity. I fail to see how this is industrial anymore

Ravenous is back! I've always though Funker Vogt was rarely more than ok but loved the side projects. Now I'm just waiting for a new Fusspils 11 album (the best Funker Vogt related thing).

I was redirected to this thread for recommendations similar to Kontravoid

Phlegmish posted:

I've spent most of my life listening to rock music (especially on the punk spectrum), never really giving EDM the time of day (to be fair, much of it over here in Europe was terrible up until at least the 2000's) except maybe early Pendulum and a few random drum 'n' bass songs because they have some of that same energy. Last year, however, I randomly discovered Kontravoid on YouTube and was immediately hooked:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuhP9KxfAWo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7WsWrVdLds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9V8l19u_kw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-Jec9UkIgw

The slower songs have a vaguely goth feel, with that distorted synth and menacing bassline, without feeling plodding. The faster ones share some of that frantic punk/d'n'b energy. I love it.

Is this...synthwave? Is that actually a stylistically coherent subgenre? Regardless, what else sounds like this? Recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

I've never particularly been into industrial music (or EDM in general), and I don't think Kontravoid even fully fits into that genre, but there's something about this band that really connects with me, especially their 2012 album.

e: i think it's the distorted synth...bass...synth bass (alright I don't know keyboard terminology)...that hits me, while many other superficially similar acts don't really do anything for me

Sound a bit like Cyborgs on Crack.

And at the risk of being too obvious it also reminded me a bit of Front 242.

Kontravoid is usually associated with Darkwave (but then again, so are most contemporary acts that go in this thread); some of the music, especially the basslines and drums are very old-school EBM though.

Classic acts in that genre would be Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. Contemporary examples would be Youth Code and Boy Harsher.

Rhys Fulber has a new album out 28 Nov, "Brutal Nature", recorded during lockdown, and I got a promo. Mostly instrumental. Ambience with a beat. It's not bad actually, in the subgenre "old industrial musician from way back when makes a new album." I don't have a linkable public promo from it, but I expect it'll be on his Bandcamp in a month.

edit: ah, someone else linked the promo stream.

One song has Sara Taylor from Youth Code on it.

I'm quite impressed by both Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb. It would have been pretty easy for them to go around performing Mindphaser to ever-shrinking crowds. But they're out there working with younger artists and doing new stuff instead.

A. Can’t blame them for making a buck from their only real sorta mainstream hit.

B. How is there an audience for new remixes of Silence in 2021? Who are these people?

Aging goths. The answer is always aging goths.

Also, was "Silence" really the brightest star? I was way more into "Incantation." That one slayed back in the day at #'s.

I really liked her second album which was mostly just good dance music and then she took a turn into not great metal.

Maybe she was trying to be a metaphor for industrial music.

it's kind of annoying that the infectious bubblegum dance pop component of her shtick seems to have been a contribution from her dipshit abusive collaborator who she jettisoned finally. I want to like the new stuff but it's just a bit too ... same-y I guess? I Disagree had some great highlights though, but even that felt weaker and less transgressive than Am I Girl? overall, in spite of it having a lot more teeth.
