What does that have to do with anything? Nobody is making GBS threads on it for not looking like a Marvel movie or something.

spoiled answer from someone else:
it's mostly in little visual nods and passing mentions. You see, I think, Gurney, reading a tiny book implied to be religious in nature, and by behavior you can intuit it's the OC Bible. The guild is shown, and discussed a bit. From memory, butlerian jihad stuff is nearly absent, aside from the fact you never see things you would associate with computerized technology. Landsraad is mentioned, if not by name, in concept. Prana-bindu is referenced at least once, but not by name iirc. Most of the things are nods, but they're integrated into the story in such a way that it feels like a fairly alien, lived-in universe. Assume a lot of flavor stuff is in; just not mentioned specifically by name very often, and expository dialogue is generally sparse. "Show don't tell" is pretty overtly and effectively observed.

IMO the best version of the audiobook if you can find it, is an older version that is also narrated by scott brick but doesn't have a cast of voice actors doing the dialog.

The Scott Brick solo version is probably my favorite too and certainly the one I'm most accustomed to, but there's an even older version read by George Guidall that's also good - he has a very pleasant voice - but has some weird pronunciation of words like 'Fedaykin'. There's yet another version read by a guy named J.P. Linton that I couldn't stand at all. He sounded like the kind of narrator who should read the kind of books you buy at the airport. Both of these can be found on the audiobookbay if you're not averse to :filez:

It wears a human face.
James McAvoy on advice for his Dune "dad" Timothy Chalamet:

"I was in an adaptation of the second and third books. He is in the first book. And he's playing a character who ultimately becomes my father, in terms of the character dialogue. So, no. I've got no advice for him. And he doesn't need any advice from me, he's a cracking actor.

But I'll tell you what's one really good piece of advice that was given to me once, was by the cast of ... what was the show called again? Farscape. And it was at the L.A. premiere of Children of Dune, and they said to me, that the thing with this sh*t, i.e. science fiction, is that you have to believe it more than you believe good writing. Good writing, you can just do. It's easier. But this stuff is hard, because it's so bonkers, you know what I mean? And I've really, I've always remembered that advice and taken it to heart. It's so kept me going really, through a lot of science fiction and fantasy work that I've done. Because it was Claudia Black that said it. And I think that's just good advice for any actor doing any kind of science fiction and/or fantasy, you know?"

Oh well he wrote some good books

Frank Herbert grew up on the political fringe. His grandparents were members of the Social Democracy of America — an ancestor of today’s Democratic Socialists of America — and helped found a socialist commune in Washington State, north of Tacoma. That’s where his father was raised, and it’s where Herbert spent many of his young years. Though the formal experiment in socialism died a few years before his birth in 1920, Herbert recalled inheriting some “rock-ribbed ideas about the ways people should live together.”

Haha, holy poo poo. I "read" the books up until Chapterhouse that way in the late aughties and couldn't afford anything but :filez:. It was a miserable experience, but to a kid with a dune addiction but no money it was bearable.

I remember those recordings skipping and that I could hear what I think was traces of the B-side of the tapes it was ripped from. It was so poo poo.

On the note of poo poo, I recall bailing from Chapterhouse (the low quality and O'Brian's awful voice finally got to me, I just couldn't follow the plot anymore) and trying out the failson House prequels. I got to Corrino and somewhere mid-book decided it was terrible and to never read any of them again.

Can't remember what was the final straw but dumb poo poo like Bene Gesserits pissing blood on the Emperor's carpets to spite him didn't help.

The writing does take a turn in the sequels, from the tight, relatively plot focused hero cycle in Dune to a lot of scenes of Important People gabbing on about their plots within plots.

My advice would be to expect more of that and plenty of introspective Ayahuasca-induced ruminations on the nature of humanity and the gays and bla bla bla but to stick with it as there are some incredible moments coming up and of course God Emperor is bonkers, but I wouldn't blame anyone for bouncing off it coming from Dune and expecting more of the same.

If that sounds unbearable and you haven't already, Foundation does some of the same long time scale sci-fi stuff and from what I recall retains a more consistent narrative voice throughout.
