I would literally rather run out of money, break my lease, move in with a friend or relative, and deal with the inevitable depressive episode than work retail or food service during this pandemic. I am a single guy so I can understand people with actual responsibilities not feeling the same.

Both the Little Caesars and Long John Silver's here are closing at 8 PM every day due to lack of workers. Just those two though, everywhere else is open until at least 10 PM.

A few other places have posted in the local forum some thinly veiled "We're hiring because lazy people don't want to work" posts. Really is a reckoning right now.

I went to pick up my own breakfast yesterday to save on door dash fees and my local McDonald's was stupid slammed. Took me 30 minutes to get breakfast and a bunch of the other people waiting around were literally saying OUT LOUD the poo poo like "nobody wants to work" "this generation is so lazy" etc. I (stupidly) tried to push back against some of that verbally and I dunno if it was because I was presenting femme yesterday or what, but some dude got literally up in my face to scream about how he will NOT calm down and that him waiting for his McMuffin was a big deal.

I'm soooo loving tired of the "nobody wants to work bullshit". U.S. worker productivity has done nothing but rise for decades as wages have flattened or even dropped. This is really feeling like some sort of flash point or us absolutely reaching critical mass. I hate to bring up the tired Late Stage Game of Monopoloy Meme but it really feels like that's what we're living in. Nobody wants to buy Old Kent Road and Whitechapel Road and even if they could, they've been snapped up by investors and can't afford it anyway. If they COULD afford it, it wouldn't change the game at all. Just more struggling. The bosses I've worked for lately don't seem to understand that they're getting hosed just as much as the rest of us, failing to realize that they're not in the 5% either and never will be, which is where ALL of the loving money is. They're super pissed that the money isn't rolling in like it's "supposed to". That's why they're mad but they're blaming the wrong people. The places I've worked lately require an obscene amount of knowledge to make LESS than I made only 10 years ago. Capitalism doesn't work when nobody has any money to buy the poo poo that drives it. All the money has trickled up. Don't give me this bullshit that tossing out $1400 checks is crashing the loving economy. *posts pie analogy video*

Practically every drive through I've seen is like 10 cars long at any given time of day. People just cannot fathom cooking for themselves instead of sitting in a 30+ minute line.

I teach economics and careers in high school. For years, I have told kids that the economy will not be the same that they face today and that they need to be prepared for it. I talked about how Walmarts in the future May end up as warehouses where workers fill orders (like they do now) but there is no more going through the building. The company sells more by using the app to increase impulse purchases and they save money on labor by not having to stock shelves other than just boxes. I have decided that this is a labor shift that was going to happen in a decade or so as those shifts happen but the pandemic sped it up. People left low paying jobs through no choice of their own and, using the UI, they took a risk on either staying home or starting their own business. “You need to find a better job or stop bitching” has now led to those people doing just that and finding out how to survive without that work life.

I saw a Reddit post where a guy who moved to Denver from the south was like "Where are all the 24 hour places to eat and shop?" The answer was basically that there's a bunch of places like that in, say, Tuscaloosa because labor is cheap and plentiful. In Denver, it's scarce and expensive. The night cashier at the grocery store is needed during rush hour. Her overnight supervisor in Tuscaloosa? They're a head teller at a bank here. So everything except for 7-11, Denny's, and a smattering of dive bars and independent all night diners shuts early. Kroger used to be 24 hours, then 5-midnight, now it's 6AM-11PM. Target "overnight" shifts, even at busy stores, are more like 4AM-1230PM. Anything that pays below $15 an hour is going to struggle to get anyone through the door to work. I kind of don't mind this. Nice to see labor getting a tiny bit of power for once.

Yeah, tbh even though the lovely customers were bad too, I probably could have eked it out in retail as second earner forever if we could just be open reasonable hours. But the last motherfucking manager wouldn't even let me have sunday as my one guaranteed shift off so I quit to focus on my health care* and find a better job when I'm ready. This time we at least have enough family support that I'm not stopping until I get a job that matches my own self-worth. *exacerbated by the gently caress face's text that I better start calling him directly for calling out when I was in between er and urgent care visits because I literally could not keep food or liquids down for almost a week. From 1936 to 1981 the top tax bracket in the United States was at least 70%. During that period we put a man on the moon, built the Interstate Highway system, funded the New Deal, fought WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, eradicated several diseases, saw the birth of the Internet, and built hundreds of 2 and 4 year colleges. Then Reaganomics hosed up the economy, possibly irretrievably.

Sargon of Akkad wasn't a gamergater iirc, he just liked to yell about Western Civilization using a cartoon of a bust of a mesopotamian sculpture as his avatar. And is british, so not exactly "of Akkad" but they prolly stole the bust at least once, and he's prolly ok with it.
