SHINee's back

ZypherIM posted:

I've got quite a few people ahead of her as the best, but she is way above the average and like you say she is quite good with conveying emotion. I agree that having a mix of her singing and rapping leads to a more enjoyable song, and found it a more interesting listen than spicy.

Oh, I have plenty of people ahead of her as the best, as well. But she's up there with them for me.

I really hope we get an acoustic Come Back Home or If I Were You tier song on Alpha. Since she wrote If I Were You I am hopeful. She does so well with heart wrenching, especially live.

If I wanted to dive into Twice's discography, where should I start? Right now I'm vibing with Somi's stuff, and Everglow's recent comeback.

Just go through their MVs from the start.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzm9sEXjZ90feWaeV0XuOuRaQqLTHVKDv

and add Cry for Me to that list somewhere too, as it's one of their best singles but doesn't have an MV.

The first 2/3s of their discography has the signature JYP/Twice cute concept sound but over the last two years they have really become versatility queens doing all kinds of genres. Cheer Up was the monster hit that really made them blow up but Like Ooh Ah is the better song (fight me!) and one of the best debuts of all time. If the cute sound doesn't catch your ear go in reverse order because given your taste stuff like Perfect World, I Can't Stop Me, and Cry for Me probably will.

The japanese singles follow a similar arc going from heavy JPOP sound to more mature modern pop stuff.

Wherever you start with Twice, make sure you give Eyes Wide Open a front-to-back listen, as it's one of the singularly greatest K-pop albums I've ever heard.

I second everything above. Throwing in Up No More and Hell In Heaven as ones to hit too, both off Eyes Wide Open no less. Better is also deceptively catchy once it gets rolling.

I can't remember if I tossed in the link for Seori's dive with you or not. I think the music video upload has some sort of hosed up issue with the bass that makes it really.. crackly or something? Anyways, the other uploads of it don't have that, so if you watched that and were put off by it try one of the versions that are clean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LYZB9S1v5g

That chorus is killer. Not sure about the verses for a western audience, much more Kpop sounding than I expected.

There is some magic going in on the production for this track. The perfect compression on the picked bass, the vocoder harmony under Chae in the pre-chorus, the ad-lib mixing, all just :discourse:

"I want to see what she's in love with."

This is up there with my favorite twice tracks I think, they did a good job not only on the production, but a couple things that I personally like with it in mind as their english release.

The average of the range isn't really high. I know in the past twice, along with plenty of other groups, have pitched parts higher than really fits all the vocalist's ranges. The big example that comes to mind is Momo on early twice tracks. This song (and their JP releases as well) sits better into their ranges and I think it sounds a lot better.

They did a really good job with the english, which is hard. There is a touch of accent here and there but nothing thick. Probably not even noticed by a lot of people tbqh.

The last thing that comes to mind that will help a ton is that it doesn't sound like "kpop group doing a western song". Its in english, and they've done some other structure stuff to fit more of the western pop audience, but it still feels like a twice song. Easily as much as their JP releases feel different but still them as a group. This sort of thing I think helps people get into a group or for fans to go "also try this song!" and stuff.

The whole mv just feels *fun* too.

I can imagine it being confusing for someone new to Twice trying to work out whether there are 8 or 9 members based on the video but at least Jeongyeon is in it in some capacity. Song is great.

The Coldplay song is just embarrassing; super generic song, rock-opera cliche concept, Chris Martin trying to look 20 years younger. I'm sure it'll be great for Coldplay but BTS probably don't need it

Welp, that's about the most infectious earworm I've heard in a year or so. The drop spoiler set my expectations high, then the MV previews dialed them back a bit, but the song in its entirety far exceeds either set. Whatta bop. Twice at their absolute best.
