Workers Escape From A Canadian Mine After A 10-Hour Vertical Climb

Dozens of workers trapped in a Canadian mine are in the process of making a dramatic escape that involves climbing vertically for up to 10 hours.

Having worked on some BMWs, this is actually a non-recommended but indeed a possible way to cut some long repair times by 90%.
Most notably, a 4 hour recirculation membrane replacement job on an 325d (? i dont remember), which would require removing intake, injector rail and some other things is done with an abomination like that through the wheel well in 15 minutes.

High five fellow BMW mechanic. Yeah, this looked like normal SOP to me as well.

70 percent of Americans are not insane, but we let the insane 30 percent decide how every single facet of our society other than media is going to be done.

It's a pretty bad system, but it allows for diversity in cheerio ads at least.

I've changed headlight bulbs in a few volkswagens and it's a horrible experience. I was able to fully change the lights in my GTI but a jetta you can only get to the DRL, the actual headlights require the bumper to be pulled off and the assemble removed, or the wheel and wheel well to be removed. All this could be resolved if they allowed for an inch more space, it's so stupid.

I remember a goon complaining about a model of car where the first step for changing a headlight is to remove a piece of that side's rear body panels.

Thank you, American and Japanese pickup manufacturers, for making head and tail lights exceedingly eay to change. Headlights, just pop two spring clips up, move light a bit to make room, twist bulb out, twist bulb in. Sometimes you don't even need to do that, just twist. Tail lights need two screws undone and a healthy yank does the rest.

Shoutout to Volvo engineers from the 240/740/940 era, too. 90% of regular maintenance could be accomplished with the five piece tool kit in back, a few of those tools could even be combined in a few ways or used backwards. The 740/940 wagons had the tail lights held on by a single screw and they put a hole in the stamped metal support behind it just big enough to guide the bigass screwdriver in, even at night.

RETAIL RETAIL LISTEN TO ME BITCH ABOUT RETAIL
My damned Traverse forced one into the wheel well with the wheels turned all the way to the other side of whatever you were working on, then you had to peel back the wheel well liner, shove your arm in there (I'm a big dude, so that scraped me to hell and back) and unscrew (blind) a cap, quarter-turn and pull, then replace the bulb (blind) and reverse the process.

At least the brake light was easy. One screw popped the whole assembly off. Except for the time the bulb really didn't want out and shattered in my hand. A piece of glass went so far into my finger that I still don't think it's fully healed several years later, and I have a nasty scar. Bled like a pig for hours.

Please don't forget that I am an extremely racist idiot who also has terrible opinions about the Culture series.
The East Coast/West Coast rivalry continues apace, with the NYPD trying to one-up the LAPD. Sadly while they may be ahead in the serious injury count, they're way behind on property damage.

https://nypost.com/2021/09/27/two-cops-seriously-injured-in-fireworks-explosion-in-nyc/

quote:

A pair of NYPD cops were maimed early Monday — including one whose hand was almost completely blown off — as they allegedly set off fireworks in a Citi Field parking lot while on duty, The Post has learned.

One of the officers is believed to have brought the pyrotechnics to his shift and was playing with them just before 3:45 a.m., when the blast left him and the other male officer with serious injuries, sources said.

One cop lost a finger, while the other suffered severe injuries to their right hand and right eye, sources said, adding that the second officer may lose their eye.

e: though apparently you only need to get milk to 160F to pasteurize and it boils at 212F so maybe for some other reason
