A firsthand account of the extraordinary efforts of ordinary Venezuelans to reclaim their democracy from the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, whose corrupt and brutal policies have plunged the country into economic ruin. Working with a network of clandestine camera crews, the filmmakers spent three years recording exclusive interviews with key opposition figures including Leopoldo López and grassroots activist Nixon Leal, as well as a host of everyday citizens, and captured the remarkable courage of the Venezuelan people as they unite to restore liberty to their country

This sort of thing is always one of the most infuriating, in your face aspects of imperialism. Nothing like some rando staffer becoming the person in charge of american policy for your country because they took 2 semesters of spanish and a semester of "a survey to latin american politics"

Having prisons where the inmates basically run the inside and have their own microeconomy is really common in Latin America. Usually the guards never step foot inside past the security checkpoints, and it's anything goes.

not sure they're quite this extreme but also

quote:

Annual violent deaths in Ecuadorian prisons were in single figures during the government of Rafael Correa, the year he left power (2017) it was eight. However, following austerity measures under the neoliberal Lenin Moreno government, violent deaths began to skyrocket. Within two years, the annual figure quadrupled to 32, and in 2020, it reached 52. During the first nine months of 2021, that figure stands at 226 and counting.

Here in Brazil there are prison massacres all the time due to intergang rivalries but they often do it with crude improvised weapons, not smuggling actual weaponry inside the place.

November is going to be an interesting time in Central America and the Caribbean. Reactionaries are mobilizing across the region.

Opposition elements in Cuba are trying to have a more sustained protest movement than the one day they did this summer.

quote:

It is, however, the actions scheduled for November 20 that appear to be generating more excitement in the community. Marches across the island are planned, including in Guantanamo, Holguin, Camaguey and Havana, where organizers hope to begin at the iconic Malecón in Old Havana and end up in front of the National Capitol building, the headquarters of the National Assembly of People’s Power.

The movement is being outwardly advertised as a “peaceful march in favor of human rights and against violence,” and already has a who’s who of U.S.-backed figures such as the San Isidro Movement rap group and politician Manuel Cuesta Morúa signed on.

Yet, internally, the goals of the action appear quite different. Sharing an image reading “hit the streets until they [the government] fall,” Perez Rodriguez gleefully announced that “all of Cuba is preparing for this!”– quite a different message from the somber and respectful protests being reported on by sympathetic expat media in Florida. Other group members shared advice on planning and getting permits. Organizers hope to bring out thousands of people in Havana and other cities in what they hope will be the beginning of a revolution.

The US is still using the summer protests to attack Cuba as well.

Nicaragua is having elections in November too, and those are going to be a flashpoint. The opposition is already calling them illegitimate. I wouldn't be surprised if the US goes all in supporting a regime change push.

They've been after Oretga for a while now. There have been a bunch of very violent right winged protests that have resulted in random people killed. The results of these protests were the government passing laws stating that people who receive money from foreign governments have to disclose it. For some reason the governments of Mexico and Argentina both joined the US in condemning Ortega for doing this.
