Well, apparently my manager submitted the transfer out form and the manager for the position I'm supposed to be promoted to submitted the transfer in form today. The new manager requested HR do some research into the appropriate salary, but I expect them to cherry-pick low ones. Would it make sense to take a bunch of screenshots of job ads for this state for the same job title with their pay range (CO requires employers post that now) to say "Hey, market's crazy right now" to try to get them to budge a little bit and then I still probably bounce in a year because it's still a MSP and I'll still be underpaid but at least then I have Cloud Engineer on my resume already?

When I was converting from contractor to FTE I brought in numbers from DICE and Salary.com and stuff and they said "Well we did research too and here are some sources that back up our pay range" and showed some sites I literally never heard of in my life. I'm still not optimistic I'll get anything above average by doing this but I'm hoping that sending them like 20 job postings open right now in the same state for the same job title with employer-published ranges will be a little better as far as getting me to average.

Yes, definitely. Always do your research when the chance to talk salary comes up. They're doing their research, you do yours.

Especially because this job doesn't have a 401(k) match, which pretty much every other company has.

Granted at this point I'm focusing on paying off high-interest debt so I don't need it right now but it's leverage. And hey, if they offer me something way too low and refuse to budge I'll take it and then take my new job description and find a better job with it.

HR director lost her phone this weekend so I had to go to the Verizon store and get her a new one. I found it really odd. Then yesterday she came in to get it, and Verizon screws up the DEP enrollment so she didn't get it.

She signed out of her computer at 5:02 on Tuesday. Nobody had heard from her all day today. People were asking me if her new phone was working etc etc

A couple hours ago I found out on social media that they are looking for her husband because he killed her. Tomorrow should be interesting. Verizon just emailed me that the phone is enrolled in DEP.

For the love of god, if cops come to ask questions, make sure your company legal council is present and that you answer only work related questions. The moment questions are directed at you personally about anything that isn't basic work related to getting her a phone, shut the gently caress up. The cops aren't your buddies, your pals, and if she was murdered anybody she came in contact with is a possible suspect and that includes you, goon who replaced her company phone.

Your goal is to not even have to talk to anyone, give all that info to your boss and have them or the company legal council handle it. Now isn't the time to get chatty.

It's amazing their hands can support such awesome.
We had the FBI show up one morning and take the computer from the dispatch office of our armed security contractor. Turns out one of the guards was in deep poo poo for CP and had signed in to his google account on the dispatch computer at some point. He had fled the country a couple days prior.

Security called me to come sign whatever paperwork the FBI had stating that they were taking the computer. Fuuuuuck that, I'm a contractor too and I'm not getting involved in this in any way, shape or form. Called the fed who was over the security contract and who's name was on the billing for that machine, and they came down and signed for it. Good thing too, because that machine showed up on a inventory discrepancy report FOUR YEARS LATER because they didn't cancel the internal billing for it. Got escalated to our feds in DC, who found the old ticket to replace the machine with my name on it, and they came calling. I had attached a copy of that form to the billing record for the new workstation, and pointed them right at the (now retired) local fed who signed for it, and went about my merry way still totally uninvolved.

We had a chomo at my first job, FBI and poo poo came in with subpoenaed Yahoo messenger logs coming from the IP of our T1. I dug through some squid logs and found the IP on our side, they were at a branch office so they had to get new subpoenas with the other address on it. Then they tried to take our file servers, even though nothing was on them. The next day they went to the other location, took his workstation, and then like 3 years later I get a call from the FBI office and I had to drive 2 hours to go pick it up even though it was broken and covered in evidence stickers. But I got to go for an expensed visit to detroit for the day so whatever.

The worst thing that I've had to deal with, and I'm lucky, is when a director got arrested for producing cp.

He had a ton of work stuff saved on his laptop and on the network, but nobody knew if he was storing non-work stuff on there.

I think in light of more experience I probably would have insisted on having counsel either present or at least run the plan past them.

I got another tech to sit with me, we used windirstat to get a visualization of the stuff and there was a poo poo ton of photos, some with nerve racking names "danny-with-dog-01.png" and stuff.

Long story short, it was 100% work related content, nothing problematic at all. The guy kept work separate.

Might be a good thing to try and figure out ahead of time for anyone in a position where it might come up.
