I haven't seen any truly lovely or wacky guitars in a long time and surfboard guitar is pretty peak silly. Hard to top it really. If we wanna get into wacky and strange instrument territory I could link Rob Scallon's recent vid on the cristal baschet. It's a neat instrument but goddamn.

You know when you see a band in a cartoon, and it's obvious the artists have never looked closely at a guitar before? This is the guitar they draw.

I remember decades ago when these forums were largely about posting horrible stuff found on other websites seeing a really poorly drawn diaper/inflation porn comic where in the background the artist had lovingly rendered a Diezel VH4 and that panel has stuck in my brain now forever.

lol

Also it's not for me or anything close to my style but something about that paint job and pickguard design is really well done and cool though. Not anywhere close to $1000 cool but still. It's neat.

Yeah, but then you google "soviet era guitars" or "italian electric guitars from the fifties" and you realise its just YOU who hasn't been looking closely at the right guitars.

That's true! My brother's an illustrator and I was giving him poo poo lately because he drew a guitar with the 12th fret markers on the first fret for some reason.

I just found a bunch of my posts of stupid guitars in the last thread from almost 8 years ago (jesus). 3 pages of nothing but pictures of ridiculous and insane guitars.

Gonna stare at a wall and think about going 'haha remember those dumb guitar threads almost a decade ago.' Can file that along with how often I think about Hulk Hogan Meat Shoes.

Takanaka's whole vibe rules though.

I really should have come up with something better before spending five bucks on this.

Sure it's silly, but the dude could play it comfortably in concert. I remember seeing Andrew W K in concert and his taco guitar was played for the approximate 20 seconds of the intro to She Is Beautiful and immediately given to a roadie, never to be seen again.

A lot of relic jobs go way too far into the unbelievable wear, but there is something about a very light relic where it feels "broken in" but that's mostly down to the necks having the finish removed or a satin finish instead of gloss. Then again I own this

At least it's a cheap Chinese copy.

I think whats lame about it is there's no story behind it. I can look at my guitars point out where and why stuff happened. The headstock on my Les paul broke in Denver, and I glued it together in Salt Lake City, and played it the rest of the tour. When I look at all the strap button holes, I remember ripping it out in Tulsa and having to play an 11 minute long song with no strap, the chunk out of the binding is where I hung it in the ceiling and it dropped 10 feet onto a monitor. poo poo like that. A relic'd guitar is like, oh yeah this was new, this is where I hit it with a belt sander, and this spot is where I used some steel wool.

I'm not going to lie - I do like the ones with the gold leaf where the fake relic-ing doesn't look like an attempt at actual wear-and-tear.

I probably just like gold leaf to be honest.

BonHair

"It looks cool" is a perfectly legitimate reason to get a finish on your guitar, even if it's a relic finish. Having a guitar with a story is always cooler, but that's more to do with the actual stories than the look. Getting a refinish on an old worn guitar doesn't remove the stories, and in the same way, a relic job doesn't add them. But I don't think anyone believes it does, it's just a cool look.

I usually buy used guitars so mine already have a few dings or whatever. I like a beat up guitar. That being said I do think it's funny people insist on a brand new guitar that looks like it should be listed as "fair" condition on Reverb.

It's artisanal…

Really what floats your boat is fine. It's your instrument, your style, anything beyond idle chatter like this is not worth the effort. It's the affectation of going to the effort and expense of wear and tear that's amusing and confusing.

That's right.

The sweat, oil, and grime should be the only instruments finish.
