Oh dear me posted:Jess Phillips has a 10000 majority as Labour. I'd think MPs in Conservative target seats are the most likely culprits. I doubt there are 3 Labour MPs who have the winning combination of: A) charismatic enough that they'd maintain a winning vote-share even after crossing the floor; and B) actually likely to join the Tories. Remember that the last time Labour MPs jumped ship, they all lost pretty spectacularly when they next had to contest a seat. This is probably a Mandelson leak, to lower expectations so that when no-one leaves and polling numbers dip another 5-6 points, it will be a success that Keith's held the party together as opposed to a moribund leader dragging the party with him as he falls off a cliff.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58777034 First: running in an ironed shirt and dress shoes, what a loving idiot. Second: these utterly pitiful policies are more interesting to me than Kier's "spy on you neighbours via WhatsApp" tentpole. Their logic reminds me of Corbyn in 2017: https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2017/07/jeremy-corbyn-wholesale-eu-immigration-has-destroyed-conditions-british, where he wasn't going against immigration or immigrants, but saying the economy is hosed up if employers can abuse immigrants at pitiful wages, and instead jobs must provide wages and conditions attractive to any employees, British or otherwise. And yeah, money for sport facilities in poor areas, sure, that's positive. This should have been the most open of goals for Kier and I can't believe how bad he and his mates have hosed it.

Seems the forums are no longer readable unless you sign in. My weekends policy was not to sign in and to read on an old ipad so (a) I wouldn't get drawn in to commenting but would not be faced with 350 posts to read on a Monday which would either be something politically big happened or a lengthy discussion on potato-based snacks, (b) would not have to put the main laptop on and thereby get sucked in to facebook, messenger, doing a bit of bank reconciliations for work, reading all the papers I can 'for free' dodging between browsers and different email signins to max out the freebies.

They nominally flip-flop between nothing-can-ever-be-done nihilism and call-to-arms violent activism rhetoric. Now apparently they never advocated violence and have always been useless nihilists. The Tories are bound to announce something at conference though, Johnson won't be able to resist. From the way he's been talking about wage growth being all that matters I wouldn't be surprised if they announced an increase in the minimum wage to £10 or more. I mean it's already £8.90, it wouldn't cost anything in government spending, and it would absolutely destroy Keith "Vote Labour for £10 an hour after the next election" Starmer.

These days I tend to get a look of concern and poorly hidden pity and embarrassment. A British accent still gives you a weird amount of borrowed authority and people deferring to you though, my partner has commented before that I get treated quite differently to her by strangers when I speak English. I don't know whether people just feel less confident in their second language around a native speaker, if Americans fetishizing British accents as a marker of being smart and cultured has bled through elsewhere thanks to the ubiquity of their TV and movies, or what. But it is noticeable.

22 mil for tennis courts? What about the boat house, that's what I'm asking! A knackered tennis court is a reasonably good place to contain a small game of footy and various other team games. Restoring them so that only a few people can play only tennis on them is a total waste of money. It makes them a far less useful space and they'll fall into disrepair rapidly. The council where I grew up spent a load of money renovating their old tennis court into... a skatepark. More than two people can use it at once and it facilitates an activity the local kids are interested in.

They also run tennis camps and after school lessons for kids. There is a real mix of people using the courts. There is a skate park right next door and a lot of space for football. Tennis can absolutely be a part of a council’s recreational offering. Right now wind is up to 43.8% of our electricity generation, plus 12% solar, with gas down to 18.6%. Hopefully the return of wind the last week or so is blunting the worst of gas prices on our electricity bills...

As someone who plays workers and resources soviet republic, and therefore is qualified to make public service planning decisions, tennis courts are strictly inferior to football because you can fit 22 people on a football pitch at a time, but only 2 on a tennis court. Football is the sport of the proletariat and space-efficient planning enthusiast. Were I to cater to the whims of the tennis people there would be less space for train factories.

I used to live beside a school, and right beside their two outdoor free gravel tennis courts. 50 weeks of the year, nothing, nada, zilch. Even the school barely used it. Wimbledon fortnight, assholes shouting all day until dusk that it was in or out, that it was their turn, or climbing into our yards to get balls back. Hated tennis with a passion, it took over the TV all day, and it was outside so couldn't escape it. Still think its poo poo and won't watch it.

They even played down how dangerous the proud boys are as an organisation. Truly the vanguard of the revolution. I dunno, it's a reasonable if slightly cynical reaction. Certain goons are obsessed with CSPAM being closed down for whatever reason & they were drooling at the prospect of using this nonsense as an excuse to make that happen. Plus yeah, calling for armed insurrection/propaganda of the deed on a public forum which has increased scrutiny on it after this? Unwise to put it mildly. I'd also add that tbh the line between "lol nothing matters" nihilism/despair & feeling attracted to political violence is pretty thin so to me the duality isn't really that surprising. I mostly like CSPAM but the USPol threads are really not worth even glancing at. But then that's true of D&D too, except most threads in D&D except this one can be ignored because it's a forum filled with melty libs. My hot take is that tennis was pretty fun to play even though like most sports I was utterly gash at it. gently caress, even cricket was fun to play & I'd sooner drink bleach than watch that.
