HOLD ON GUYS I'M POSTING ABOUT INTERNET ROBOTS
This is slightly less garbage. I don't know why Russ blurted his nonsense onto twitter before this happened though, it takes zero common sense to go "oh hey people saying trans rights are probably not bigots or trolls" and then not ban them.

PGI has a history of being targeted by a lot of poo poo on social media and Russ faces the brunt of it, so he has developed this habit of always defending his employees automatically. Without looking into the situation or understanding what it was about in this case, he just put his foot in his mouth and made the situation much worse than it ever should have been. One way to further fix this would be to make a public apology about

1. the misunderstanding and hurt that he caused with his twitter responses from the hip
2. the fact that he casually retweeted someone with a racist flag on his mech back in May 2021 and that he just always randomnly retweets anyone who'll say something positive about their games
3. that PGI will take the appropriate internal measures to ensure this won't happen again.

Matt also said this about Russ:
https://twitter.com/Matt_Neutron/status/1444895255690547203

There are some really good people at PGI with their hearts in the right place but unfortunately Russ' off-the-cuff PR blew up in his face. It shouldn't be hard to fix with what I suggested above.

this means russ did not bother to read the posts he was replying to when he hosed up, which is believable but absolutely lol

like I said, it's a habit/knee-jerk reaction he's developed the last 5 years to defend the company from any criticism - which is understandable given the way some toxic gamers talk to people at game companies, but in this case also not so good when you try to do PR on your social media account on a Saturday. Not the first time that Russ inadvertently put his foot in his mouth. But it can be 'easily' remedied with the suggestions above.

It is, at least, a better response that I've come to respect out of cases like this, better than Blizzard though that bar is buried in the center of the earth, but man alive does this really seem like a complete lack of coordination and communication on PGI's part. You have a CS rep doing this weird poo poo where "trans rights" gets your account suspended and telling two teams they have to be renamed, the company president goes "I stand by this 100% because the word trans is simply forbidden entirely" and then you have this third person having to come in and unfuck it. I'm just saying, this doesn't seem like a super great way to manage things.

e; at the very least, I would probably have a long talk with the CS rep that started this whole thing off to the effect of "what the gently caress is wrong with you?"

Yeah that was sort of my take on the whole thing like if you ever find yourself going down the "We banned you for your protection, if you say the 't word' our customers might harass you" road that's probably a good time to stop and re-evaluate.

One of the best things about HBS's Battletech is that it updates the setting's tone to something not so, uhh, offensively 80s.

i'm not one to cut pgi a lot of slack but they're going back on banning people and renaming teams. it's not an empty message of solidarity, they're unfucking what they hosed up in the first place.

not great that they hosed up or that it got this far, but it's not nothing.

The bad moderation decisions seem less like a corporate driven action and more like a idiot on the mod team making a bad call. I'm guessing there is going to be some behind the scenes reaming out of the people responsible.

Yeah it seems like this has all been sort of a perfect storm of a GM that was out of their depth and made a bad call, followed by Russ getting defensive before he kinda knew what was going on. I know at least a couple 'notable' people have reached out to the CFO of EG7, who sources investment for PGI and a couple other companies, so I'm sure there was some top-down discussion.

I'm glad they reversed course, hopefully the people complaining about the fact that you can say "trans rights" without getting banned now will find some way to heal :qq:

You gotta laugh at the fact that there's a non-zero chance that part of the reason for Russ getting ultra defensive is due to goons trolling him over the last 10 years.

It's pretty funny that PGI's general track record makes the "incompetent, not hateful" defense actually fairly believable

I'd guess probably not - the person who made the bad moderation decisions, GM Patience, has been the subject of a half dozen situations like this before, banning and censoring people for arbitrary reasons which are sometimes politically motivated. They've been doing this for years and are still working at the company, still making the same bad decisions.
