Apparently the fix that I implemented yesterday was totally fine if you want a stab at it. At least, I cya'ed it three ways and it was approved each time.

I worked for The Business Printer Manufacturer for the better part of a decade, I had my time with sledgehammers. The boneyards can be fun places.

Serious answer: I don't know what the security ramifications of this are - I do know it is not a replacement for v4 drivers, but everyone is just shrugging until v4 drivers are widely available I guess. If anyone has a better fix or a reason why this should be broken, please let me know.

Create a group policy object linked to the PCs OU. The server cannot be in this OU or it won't work.

Change:
Computer Config/Administrative Templates/Printing/Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections

-Set to disabled

Computer Config/Administrative Templates/Printing/Point and Print Restrictions

-check Users Can Only print to These Servers
-Enter the FQDN of the print server
-when installing for a new connection, don't elevate
-when installing for an existing connection, don't elevate

Computer Config/Preferences/Registry
-Add new registry item
-Hive HKLM
-Key Path: SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\PointAndPrint
-Value Name: RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators
-Value Type: REG_DWORD
-Value Data: 0

Run gpupdate. Add Driver. Done.

If a PC is sharing a USB connected printer, create a sub OU, break inheritance, and add the FQDN to the PaP Restrictions list.

vvv well played

Ah, it says 'passcode wrong format' I dont usually see that error, are you doing it in the format of $XYZ?

"Yes I 100% sure because I used such and such for that bit I'm really confident it's correct"

It's still saying the same thing - tell you what, I'll pop and see you on my way past...

...right show me what you are doing

As the dude starts typing in his RSA code, he said "e" - e? where is an e? there!

Ah, I see the problem - You've plugged the USB bit of your token in so the display is upside down...

I've put in a firm two week notice on help desk, which ends Friday.

After which, everyone is aware that I will be completely unreachable for two weeks while I prep and train for the new position.

Once I return, I have made it explicitly clear that I will be available to advise or clear up any tribal knowledge issues for the new lead, but I will in no way be doing any helpdesk work.

If they can't respect that, there's a thousand other companies out there falling over themselves to hire me. I am not concerned.

This is the era of self-advocacy.

Replaced the old HP switch at home with a PoE one I borrowed from work. Should have done this sooner, PoE is so handy to have. Need to test an IP phone? Just plug it in, no need to hunt for the injector.

We're doing some more shuffling around here, and the upshot of that is I'm offloading almost everything I work on that isn't the core bits I was hired for. That feels good.

It also feels good to tell people they're very quickly becoming not my problem anymore. And we laugh about it, but I'm only partially kidding about how good it feels to dump them on someone else.

This is a message to everyone. I have planted 3 bombs inside of your datacenter. They will go off randomly in a short period of time from now. Do not try to find it. You will not be able to locate it. I have recruited an employee to plant the bomb for me and erase the security camera footage. Do not contact the police. I will see and detonate it on the spot, killing anyone near it.

I am requesting you send me $5000 USD. Payment must be made to [REDACTED] in a timely manner. I will explode the device if I feel that you're trying to avoid paying, or that I hear from my insider that you're alerting the police.

I know where you and your families live. They will be next if I do not get what I want after you're dead. Remember, alert police about this email and you're as good as dead.

While this is 99.999999% bullshit, hopefully your physical security is fine because I've personally had a disgruntled customer show up at my business with a gun after announcing that they would "cut out [our abuse manager's] heart and eat it warm".

Luckily we had a maglocking vestibule so I was able to trap the dude inside it and wait for police, but uh... yeah. I tend to take grandiose "I will kill you" threats a bit more seriously after that.

Another productive workday
A couple years back a disgruntled customer called in a bomb threat to a call center that shared a downtown office building with my company.

It was nice of them to do it right after I finished lunch so I could spend an hour outside on a cool spring day at the evac point with a few of the coworkers that I liked.

It wasn't a "real" threat, they just wanted attention. And they absolutely got it.

ETA: It's also fun to say "Sorry, gotta drop from the meeting. Building is being evac'd. Check with my manager in $distantCity for updates."

Back in my Xbox days one of my coworkers posted on Facebook that the job was poo poo and that if one more thing happened he was going to burn down the building.

Turns out posting film references is a great way to get yourself fired and your house trashed by the cops if management don't like you :v:
