I've got that show on a harddrive somewhere and the only thing I remember nearly a decade later is that Mad Blankey-era BxB Hulk was cool and I enjoyed his match with Ibushi

Is there any reason why he's never really had a proper run with the top title?

I know he held the Open the Dream Gate belt once, but wasn't that a relatively short run?

Nah, Hulk's Dream Gate reign was almost a year long. He's had a lot of nagging injuries over the years though (which he both works through and comes back too soon from), so that's probably why he hasn't gotten it again.

poo poo, you're right. For some reason, I kept thinking it was shorter than it actually was. I honestly have no idea why.

Still, 1 reign seven years ago just seems criminally low.

Is it not on the 9th?

So this UWF card has a lot of legit MMA guys doing guest appearances, but out of the GLEAT roster on this particular show, my personal faves are Yu Iizuka (fantastic selling, really versatile, does both shoot-style UWF and G.Prowrestling), Takanori Ito who's pretty clearly being positioned as a main eventer, and Michiko Miyagi who I'm pretty sure is still the only woman signed to the roster so far, and they just bring in other joshis to fight her.

On their pro wrestling shows you've got the ones I mentioned, plus the Strong Hearts crew led by CIMA/T-Hawk/El Lindaman, Kaz Hayashi who you might remember from WCW, and the really fun Beefy Boys team of Ryuichi Kawakami & Hayato Tamura. Soma Watanabe is also really good at only 22.

They've got beers

e: Chris Brookes wanted to be like 216-time Heavymetalweight Champion Shinobu before he was a wrestler, Take wanted to be like Shawn Michaels. He also really liked the Four Horsemen

e2: The first time the two worked together was from that show where Chris put Shunma in a figure-four and they went down a waterslide

e3: Take sucks at timekeeping, he only showed up for this show 8 minutes before they went live

e4: Chris' favourite food is Horse Sashimi, which sounds bonkers to my Australian ears

e5: Chris thinks his best match in DDT was the one he had with Takeshita last month. I agree

e6: CONFIRMATION, Takeshita wrote a 20 page thesis in college about the logistics of the German Suplex. He got an A mark

e7: Chris Brookes wants to kick down another forbidden door, he wants to fight EL DESPERADO. Take wants Jungle Boy

e8: Takeshita wants to go to the West Coast of America and visit muscle beach, possibly do a BOLA. Chrissy B wants to come to Australia and wrestle, maybe to hang out with Royce Chambers

e9: Itoh once got very angry with Chris because he couldn't learn the choreography for Ultimate Party 2019, Yuki Ueno had to calm her down

e10: Takeshita is super proud of the double deadlift German suplex he hit at Kawasaki Strong in February. People should watch that show again, it was ace

I have not seen Squid Game but talking of Jake Lee, if the lack of English commentary has been a hurdle to you watching All Japan then Yoshitatsu has done English commentary for the recent Triple Crown defence against Suwama.

...Didn't he do a Wrestle Kingdom once & it was awful?

sticklefifer

The problem with Yoshitatsu's commentary was more that he didn't know what to say and would occasionally chime in. He sometimes came up with some interesting information but he spoke so sporadically that it was clear he didn't need to be there.

Reading the backstage comments from yesterdays DDT show (which is going up on the 13th) and Junretsu have declared that the'll disband if they lose their 8-man title match tomorrow. Which is weird considering it's only been a month or so since they were in the Dramatic Survivor tournament, were the loser had to disband, seems to just be spoiling tomorrow's result.

Also, everyone watch tomorrow's DDT show since it's live. Not only will 37KAMIINA/DisasterBox for the tag belts rule, we've also got Sasaki's first title defence as a babyface, Yuki Ishida's official debut after his exhibition on the Who's Gonna Top preshow, and SEAdLINNG's Riko Kawahata making her DDT debut against Saki Akai. And also YOSHIHIKO vs Kazuki Hirata, which promises to be an instant classic

Someone posted a cool gif of 2 cool guys beating each other up so I had to go look up the match

Anyway, if you're interested, here's Katsuhiko Nakajima & Masa Kitamiya vs Hideyoshi Yamitani & Takuya Nomura from a Riki Choshu Produce show in 2018

Really want a singles match now between Nomura & Nakajima.

Also dropping some thoughts from the 9/10 AJPW show as I watch. Opener was a fun little young boy match with yer man Koji Doi in the bully role. The Saito Twins vs Omori & Mensore is the best of their matches to date: they really seem to have started bringing it all together after a rough start where I felt they'd been brought on TV a bit earlier than they were ready for.

Having 2 Battlarts style dudes in Abe & Hijikata teaming? Cool. Having Munenori Sawa in their corner? Cool. Have them face Yoshitatsu & Tachibana? Less cool. Have the match be mostly comedy around Sawa, the second, having his suit ripped up? Ummm, OK. Certainly a choice. Still, Abe is always compelling.

A fun Trios between Purple Haze & a mix of Suwama's past (Evolution by way of Dan Tamura) & present (Ashino). The story is that Tamura & Sato seem salty that they a bit overlooked by Suwama I guess, and Sato & Ashino had got into it on the previous show and exchanged blows. Suwama & Ashino have this cool spot where Ashino has a waist lock and then Suwama lariats him as Shotaro takes him over for a German suplex. Simple but dope. Also Irie & Zeus is a cool team.

After intermission and a break for lunch, straight into NEXTREAM vs Total Eclipse as a preview of the match between Lee & Kento coming at Ota Ward Gym. Totally go wrestling but mostly about the post-match beat down by Lee, featuring a big backdrop suplex. Even got the crowd to boo a little!

All Asia Tag match with Stronghearts vs Iwamoto & Honda. Biggest match of Honda's short career, current crop of young talent AJPW has is real fun. Stronghearts Tag matches are always real good, this was real good.

GAORA TV Title is so much better now it's not on Yoshitatsu. Instead in 2021 it has been Jun Kasai doing mad death match poo poo & now Shuji Ishikawa proving he's maybe still got some violence left in him. Obviously this match between Ishikawa & Daisuke Sekimoto isn't going to be what their MOTYC level 2015 match was, they are both older & paying for wrestling a hard style. But it is still very good. Chops and lariats and suplexes and violence. It's good.

For basically a house show in a suburb (Kitamito) of a suburb (Saitama) it's a really enjoyable show. Nothing is bad, top 2 matches are extremely worth watching and the undercard is full of exciting prospects from their Dojo who came through in the last 3 years. It's a real good time to get into All Japan is what I am saying.
