Indeed :)

I still need to tweak a load of stuff, but for now, I'm going to vape all the things. The glass is currently at -0.3C -0.4C -0.7C -0.9C, and it's smooth as gently caress.

The trick to going sub zero was adding fans with blue LEDs. Adding blue makes things colder.

I kind of do have a digital replicator for weed. I just have to press a few buttons on my pharmacy's website, and I get it delivered the next day via DPD. It's not as fast as I'd like though.

As for the iceless icebong prototype thingy.... it loving works. It looks so ridiculous too.... I love everything about it.

I have a housing association inspection in a week or so. I'm not going to move this from my coffee table, nor will I not have to medicate at least once while they are here. Interesting times.

I may have the coolest cannabis bong in the world at the moment.

I've been chatting in a few specialist cannabis vaping groups, and nobody has ever seen an active sub-zero cooler like this before... which genuinely surprises me. I know that similar contraptions must have been built before for distillation or other chemistry purposes, but I can't find any sub zero cannabis bong related device.

The next stage is to add a Raspberry pi, temperature sensors, flow sensors and a couple of relays, so I can have full temperature control as well has have a few safety failsafe features. Everything is also going to be connected to a smart plug, so I can fire up the bong 20 mins before I get out of bed.

"Alexa, fire up the bong!"

I'll then be able to ssh/vnc into the bong from the bedroom tablet to adjust settings....

... :)

Thanks. Weight? Unsure, as I don't need to move it. There's a very heavy PSU running it all, so I'll have to get back to you on that.

Re: cleaning, it's one of the easiest bits of equipment I have to clean. It does collect oil at the very top of the condenser, and it can restrict the airflow after a day's worth of heavy use:

So it's a simple case of removing the bottom whip (the one that comes from the globe bong) and shoving a small collection jar underneath, and taking the main whip out the top and shoving a funnel in.

I then carefully pour a small amount of 95% Spirytus alcohol (Polish moonshine vodka) down there. I pass the alcohol through there three times, but the third time is probably unnecessary. I then flush it out with a bit of warm water, and et voila:

It comes out spotless every time. I cleaned it today while the unit was still sub zero, and it still worked. It was a two minute job.

How do you guys feel about distillate syringes as opposed to live crystals for a vape? I never got a syringe before but my tools for scooping concentrates into my vape get grungy and the thought of being able to put a drop in there with no tools needed seems nice. A friend of mine bought one recently and said the syringe absolutely sucked and was a pain in the rear end to get out so does it really just vary depending on the brand?

I had similar viscosity issues with syringes and wax/shatter is cheaper anyhow. I just don't feel like having to heat a syringe and a banger, or pay more for the pain in the rear end.

I guess if you have a pen with some oddball carts that are easy to refill, they're probably a nice thing, but I wouldn't use them for dabs.

You don't need massive peltier units. I'm using a TEC1-12712 (theoretically 12A at 15V) and TEC1-12712 (theoretically 6A at 15V) that pull a total of 10A at ~12V. The actual power of the units are often a lot less than advertised, but as long as you insulate everything, and have large heatsinks to draw off the heat, you'll hit sub zero with one or two 40mm x 40mm peltier units. You just need to make sure you have a decent enough PSU to run it all, as well as large enough heatsinks. If you ever get a chance to salvage recycled industrial petltier units and heatsinks, they can be quite fun :)

If there's a need, I might make a TCC thread going into detail about my unit(s)... When I say unit(s), I definitely want to experiment further. The better the cooling of the heatsinks, the cooler the cold side of the peltier units can go, so I'm looking at 480mm radiators and costing up a water cooling solution for it. There's also a different flask that I want to try that I'm certain will work better, and I'd also like to see how small I can make a unit and for it to still be functional.

I've fallen down a rabbit hole with this, but I'm going to need to wait for a week or two before I spend anything else. lol

This turns my engineer brain on. If we estimate that your vape fluid temperature is 200c, and you want 0, that's a known qty of cooling capacity and you can start sizing appropriate cooling solutions based of available cooling, delta T required. And available power.

You can use anyhdrous ammonia as the working fluid for the hot side of your peltier. Or, if you don't want to die in the 7event of a leak, use glycol.

You want thermocouples at the vape source, the whip entrance measuring air temp, the peltier coolers, and anything cooling those. The goal is cold smoke, so measure that, not the glass temp.

You won't want the hot side more than about 20 degrees below ambient or it'll start to condense water. You can play games to find an optimal temperature to use condensation on the hot side cooler for extra power.

You'll also want to measure your peltier stack to find out it's maximum steady-state cooling. Put a heat source on the cold side that mimics the inlet temperature of vape air and then see what max delta T you get in 24 hrs.

Make it portable or desk sized and you have a zillion dollar idea.

Cheers for your input.

I have to use safe coolants, as it's a stoner gadget being operated by an unsafe cripple (me). I'm currently using cheap 37.5% vodka in the cool loop at the moment, and will look at something good for any hot loop system. It needs to be human and cat safe if there's any leaks.

I need to find a decent temperature sensor for the whip, as the probe sensors I currently have aren't suitable, so the exterior of the distillation tube glass is the closest I can get at the moment. It's going to be pretty much the temperature of the vodka flowing through it, so it's like using a bong made of ice. I'm probably going to end up using a Raspberry Pi and run a poo poo load of sensors detecting every temp I can

Re: condensation, there's isn't any anymore on the cold side, as I've doubly insulated every part that gets cold. Prior to that, it created a hell of a lot of puddles.

As for making it portable one day? Heh, you are reading my mind :)

Don't remember if it was this thread or the TCC one but I'll advise that if you add ultrasonic vapor it will probably make you cough until you get the ratio adjusted just right. I found that too much water vapor caused immediate coughing. Which is not really that odd, you're breathing in water, but still something to consider.

Was going to combine it with this thing I built https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KCZxWcBrHvBQlFKVkQCHuzNtuFEQeSX09vFU8ZxMvIY/ but then covid got worse, parts were backordered etc and never got back to it.
