This is a wild watch, and it's cool to see someone be this transparent. I've honestly never watched much of his stuff, but I probably will now.

It also makes your eyes pop when you think about the YouTube-only channels (specifically thinking about some guitar channels) with 2-3 million subs.

BUT, I remember one of those guys once made a video where he claimed he needed 1M views on a specific video to cover the cost of a $5k purchase he made FOR the video, then CGB talking about how every space doesn't pay out evenly, and that gaming is a good space.

The 1 million was the entire purse, not just first place. I think Mengu's cut for winning was a quarter million? Which is still a obviously a lot.

According to the page for lifetime earnings, not a single person has made over a million dollars from playing in professional tournaments. Though this obviously doesn't count income from twitch, articles, tournaments run outside of the pro tour (eg SCG tour), etc

that page is super out of date, since this was before that huge infusion of prize money in 2019. pv for example earned another i believe $250k from the worlds he won that's not included here

I just picked up what I believe was a very cheap MH2 bundle box at a games expo (£36 I think) just as a little treat. Naturally I open Kaldra Compleat, the main big-ticket card from the set that I had already bought as a single.

But how does rarity distribution work for the set? I opened a pack with two rares, neither are foil or alt art as far as I know. Another had one rare and four uncommon, I think one of those might have been the sketch version

Bundles are set boosters instead of draft boosters now right?

So they usually have 1-3 rares and a weird common/uncommon distribution

MH2 packs have one slot for a special card like sketch, borderless or retro reprint (its where you get fetchlands from)

MH2 were draft boosters, Midnight Hunt has set boosters.

MH2 has a rare/mythic slot and a possible extra rare/mythic that's a reprint that is "new to modern" What are the two rares you got in the pack?

pretty crazy that LSV makes such a meager amount of twitch considering he usually has over 2k viewers. much smallers channels make a lot more money than he does. althought now that i think about it, its probably because he streams a lot less than other people and twitch only represents a small slice of the pie for him.

Less streams means less opportunities to sub. There is also a ton of other factors that goes into how often someone might sub and why, he doesn't seem to be leveraging most of those.

Draft: 1, up to 2 rares/mythics, sometimes a card is shiny
Set: Up to 4 rares/mythics, more things are shiny. 25% of the time you get a card and think, "Isn't that from a set 5 years ago?"
Collector: Everything is shiny. Guaranteed at least 4 rare/mythic+ but you get normal, alt-frame, sketch/bordreless and 1 non-shiny extended-art rare.

The Midnight Hunt Bundles I'm interested in since I think they have a bunch of the black and white + color border basic lands in them. I want to play with a complete set of them when I play draft.

A changer of ways
Day9 has been streaming since it was JustinTV and IIRC was the first or at least one of the first channels to get paid subs when they were rolling it out. I also assume he and maybe a few other of the top names are big enough deals that they get a better payout from subs like 70-30 instead of 50-50 like most people.

One part they did it in zendikar 2 and the fat packs were sold out everywhere since people were buying them just for the lands, one (thousand) part this way you have to buy more packs.

I'm a little proud of my boy Day9 - don't watch him much anymore but followed him waaaay back in the day when Starcraft 2 came out and glad he made good on that.

I'm kind of surprised Hoogland is so high up there - he has such a caustic attitude, attacks his own subscribers, complains constantly, etc etc, but hey that may actually work for what people want in streamers, I have no idea.

He puts a shitload of effort into his community, indulges his chat member's questions and stories, the dayknights 30 day projects thing he pushes every few months is, in addition to being a cool motivator for people, an excellent way to cultivate a strong following, especially since he is so forward in making sure people make their projects known. He also runs gamedev projects, those 24/48 hour types(I forget the term) and then plays them on stream. He's also a variety streamer with with a set schedule instead of a sporadic one, not just mtg etc. Basically he's played the game super smartly, and yet even then he "only" makes that much.
