It's definitely worth at least an eyeroll, though I'll admit research was a lot harder in 1946 than it is now.

Chinook jargon in general is just kind of a neat thing that I like! It was a trading pidgin/creole language used by a number of different tribes in the Pacific northwest, though at its most widespread it was used from Alaska all the way down to northern California. In the latter days of its use, it also incorporated a lot of French and some English.

"Tillicum" isn't a super unusual word to crop up in this part of the world, because Chinook was such an important part of the history and people like to name things (streets, animals, boats) using Chinook words occasionally. We called our dog Tilly because she was a border collie mix from working dog stock at a local cattle farm called Tillicum farm. Here's another I occasionally hear people use in normal conversation: "skookum." It means strong/great.
Yeah, one thing I have been wondering is what sort of research Foster was able to access in the 40s. It's still not an excuse for some of the cringier parts of this arc, like Val prioritizing the white murderers over the people understandably wanting justice for an entire village being massacred, and Foster going 'and that's why this actually existing group of people had pale skin and blue eyes!!', but it makes me more lenient towards just plain inaccuracies, and more critical of attitude. If that makes sense?

I have pretty mixed feelings about this whole arc. Some of it is quite sensitive and portrays the native characters in a way that at least seems like an honest attempt at both accuracy and humanity (there's a cute bit coming up in a little while where the Indians play a game of lacrosse and are all poo poo-talking each other about it that I think is fun), but other parts are unfortunately exactly what you'd expect from a story from the forties. There are a few turns of phrase in some of the upcoming strips that are particularly uncomfortable, and the story that leads up to everyone sailing back to Europe is slightly problematic, unfortunately (hint: Aleta's status as a "goddess" plays a central role). It doesn't surprise me that Tillicum's name comes from some random word in an unrelated language, but on the other hand she's not a bad character, all things considered.

At least Foster's realist art style prevents anything ever getting too gross visually - no neon-red Disney Peter Pan Indians to worry about.

To be fair, sometimes stuff is just kind of... Like this.

I have a book, a children's book that was my mother's and she gave to me recently when we were talking about it. It's a 1946 reprint of a 1930 book that is a collection of stories about a group of first nations children learning lessons from moral fables told by the magical talking totem pole (actually their ventriloquist grandma). We don't think the stories are traditional. They're pretty standard children's fairy tale style fables but with Chinook words and a little bit of folklore and culture mixed in. The author is straight up a mystery, and we haven't been able to determine if she was white or haida or what, because it's kind of an obscure book and nobody talks about it. It's pretty woke for a white woman in 1930, but we just have no idea.

But also, it's just kind of a bunch of cute stories that equate to "don't steal" and "don't look down on people who are different from you" and "be generous," and that's hard to hate.

Full disclosure, I'm white, we're all white, we just have a very good appreciation for stories in my family and I grew up with a whole collection of first nations picture books, some of which were definitely traditional stories. We also had gentile Hanukkah.

OK, let's see. This is the Zimmermann Telegram, where the government of Germany, in a desperate bid to derail the US from sending troops to Europe, tried to recruit Mexico on their side. They courted Mexico's favor by promising that they would back their claims on former Mexican territories lost to the United States in wars in return for Mexico invading the US from the south, ie. "winked at her".

The telegram was intercepted, leaked and published in US newspapers, enraging the country and helping sway the formerly isolationist population towards sending troops to Europe. Of course the cartoonist is kind of playing down the consequences as they were much more serious than a "black eye" but maybe that's coming in a future comic.

here is the telegram, which they sent through American controlled telegram networks for reasons that are at best unclear but probably made sense to a bunch of real geniuses back in the day.

Because Allison has a very particular style in his artwork that just does not translate well when Sarin takes over. This came up here when "Wicked Things" was released; everyone is vamping for the camera and staged/posed in grossly exaggerated ways. It's even more ridiculous in "Giant Days." Meanwhile the characters, as drawn by Allison, just look like they're in on the joke. From sly to vamp, it's all in the presentation.

From a technical perspective, Sarin's art is fine, but if you've been reading the Bobbinsverse for a while the styles are completely different. And I prefer Allison's. YMMV.

I think folks get inordinately bent out of shape about the differences in art styles between the different books. Sarin's art looks great to me. Allison's own art has shifted a lot over the past couple of decades and it seems odd to get so mad about seeing yet another style used to portray his characters when the man himself has gone from crabbed doodles to adobe art to his more contemporary hand-drawn work. Obviously everybody has their own taste and if somebody doesn't like Sarin's art, that's their affair, but the vitriol that periodically crops up in the thread seems out of proportion to the actual difference it makes.
