In NYC specifically, Bloomberg eliminated the thing that allowed teachers to just say "Hey this kid is smart, let them in" and replaced it with an "objective" standardized test, and black/latino GT enrollment fell more than 50%.

AP classes are at least useful and potentially save you thousands and thousands of dollars in college tuition the weird elementary school GT programs didn’t do that. hell dump that into band and orchestra, the early Suzuki method violin stuff my elementary had was way more fun and actually useful v

I didn't remember Gifted and Talented being the worst but it wasn't that engaging either, just introduced too many topics without much a throughline, so I didn't absorb much. Most of my actual education came from independent reading I did instead of focusing on class anyway.
