Aha! I finally found a mod I'd stumbled over last year and wanted to post itt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2QraNjbQFQ It's a C&C1 total conversion featuring anime briefings and--though it may not come through in the trailer--Christian themes.

Check it, a mod for the original Red Alert (but not the remasters) that makes the entire campaign co-op. https://www.moddb.com/mods/command-conquer-blue-alert

Hey, you remember Severance: Blade of Darkness, right? Early aughts PC hack-and-slash that some people compare to Dark Souls, actually re-released on Steam a couple days ago? Well how about a Who Wants To Be a Millionaire mod for it? https://www.moddb.com/mods/qqsi-wwtbai-alpha-11 Mordja fucked around with this message at 23:14 on Oct 9, 2021 |

Some madman's adding the Gargantuan Leviathan to Subnautica. I wish I could find a better video but it's a WIP so they only people who have access to it are the Youtubers the mod maker let test it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN5QxM0HQ9g&t=484s

Pretty cool but it sucks that no matter how big you make something in Subnautica, it will always look small due to the weird FOV issue You can kind of fix it by using ReShade and enabling conformal stereographic perspective though

So here's some fun potential drama The tl:dr is that Dragon Age Redesigned was a mod for Dragon Age: Origin that redid the meshes & textures of NPCs. It was quite popular for the textures alone. It was also bundled as a series of installer executables. After 11 years someone actually looked at those executables and it turns out it's likely they have been spreading malware. From the nexus forum thread that's now hidden: https://i.imgur.com/RCkFj6d.png https://i.imgur.com/CqWeq0O.png The same dude made FO3 Redesigned and FNV Redesigned which weren't bundled as executables. Perhaps those modding communities were less juicy of a target since fomod installers were the norm back then and an executable would have raised an eyebrow. It does make me wonder how many more people have tried this trick. Mods having an installer executable is uncommon now I think, but I recall seeing it quite often 10 to 15 years ago.

First poster is blowing a ton of hot air, second poster actually posts something substantial and, uh, yes. Yikes. Also, upnp is such a security nightmare… However, it barely matters whether the mod is using an executable installer or not as many, many mods rely on loving with the game's binary as it runs. Like, there are several competing mod loaders for Unity games that work by having windows automatically load a .dll dropped in the game's folder, something so crazy wine doesn't replicate it. Mods are dlls as well, and frequently do not have their source code available with automatic builds in the open. It's hilariously simple to drop harmful code into mods and claim that heuristics are false positives since a lot of what mods are doing screams malware already.

That's a fair point. A lot of modding is based on blind trust.

Raygereio posted:That's a fair point. A lot of modding is based on blind trust. it's a problem that's made worse by many AV vendors IMO, because a lot of files, especially executables packed by popular opensource packers get flagged as malware by default, for no reason other than because obviously malware distributors also use the free packers, so when the modded exe/dll tries to fire the "ultimateUnpacker" function or whatever, it gets flagged at the end of the day, modding a game where mods are prone to fire false positives like that, people just dismiss it out of habit, and it's down to how much the user even trust the AV software anymore after constantly seeing false positives elsewhere Skwirl posted:So I installed that just a week ago. Well, from the details in the post it may no longer work properly. However, since it involves a dropper it may do whatever, including executing a mystery payload… And that means the only way to be sure is to nuke Windows from orbit. The bitter truth is that you can't reasonably pronounce a system clean unless you have an exact snapshot from before a piece of malware made it onto the box. In any case, disable upnp on your router or move it to a deny-by-default setting. It's the #1 way all those webcams in people's living spaces get opened to the Internet.

Would probably run a malwarebytes scan just to be safe, but if the malware is so unknown it may not have signatures for it and will need to be submitted to them.
