I've seen shit you people wouldn't believe. Cop cars on fire off the shoulder of I-94. I watched search lights glitter in the dark near the Ambassador Bridge. All those moments will be lost in time, like piss in the drain. Time to retch.

They sound nothing like the bands you mentioned, but The Birthday Massacre kind of play around with goth themes and aesthetics in that self-aware way. I love them so much

Who else sounds like Kontravoid? It's more strictly EDM, but I think the general tone fits the thread.

I'm not normally into EDM, but I love this artist. Menacing tone, constant use of distortion, but somehow I find it doesn't sound sterile, inhuman, or overly repetitive the way this style of music usually does. His vocals, clumsy as they are (or likely for that reason), probably have a lot to do with it

I've bought all their albums based on the strength of that one video and they're immensely good, at least 5-6 more great songs across them (mostly III and the self-titled one).

I came to say the same. Their vibe is a lot more "bunny ears, Tim Burton and striped stockings are cool" than "my soul is a pit of misery"

To be honest, goth stuff never felt miserable to me. Depending on the subgenre it was maybe about alienation or beauty in decay, but it was hardcore and its mutant alt-rock offspring that leaned into self-hatred and depression more.

If you want silly goff stuff, you probably want the Scary Bitches - they’re like an utterly un-serious Inkubus Sukkubus(who I’d forgotten about until now).

Yeah Birthday Massacre are interesting because musically they're more like a blend of synth pop with prog metal. Guitar-heavy with Tool-like syncopated drumming but 80s cheese-synth. Somehow this all just works with their cutesy-horror aesthetic and lyrics.

Lol Scary Bitches are great for that sort of cheese. Killing Miranda were another band who were mostly pretty silly. (And quite nice/chill humans.)

Note: silly in a "let's make a song joking about necrophilia" way, not "let's do ironic sunshine and rainbows".

Inkubus Sukkubus are great - I saw them play in London in 2002, and the show drew in a crowd of what could best be described as pagan-goths from the countryside.

Honestly, make a moodboard or a Pinterest or whatever of what you like, outfit wise, and thrift first. Learn basic sewing and how to dye clothing (if you don’t already). Then buy new.
