It's not much of a conversation. You're like "James Desborough is a gross creep" and he's like "I have the right to be a gross creep, good day sir."

Gor cosplayers are puzzling. Gor is rape and bondage porn written by a creepy little man who doesn't seem to have ever had any actual experience with BDSM. I don't know why anyone with any actual experience with BDSM would cotton onto it.

Oh, I'm definitely not taking this personally. I'm honestly more amused by it than anything else, especially given the absolute minimal amount of effort I had to put out to keep this guy going. It's just a constant stream of:

"DEBATE ME, COWARD!"
"No, you're dumb"
"YOUR REFUSAL TO ENGAGE WITH ME ONLY SOLIDIFIES MY VICTORY!"

Spoken like someone who has never sat down and read all 40 books of badly written porn I make the officially licensed RPG for! If you'd actually read every book you'd realize it's just a weirdly pornographic setting. Very little of the mediocre D grade fantasy novels is explicitly sex. Furthermore the weirdos who base their sex life around the books tell me they aren't rapists and have never actually built a society around heavily gendered sexual slavery.

e: I mean are there really even many gorean kinksters? It seemed like everyone into it back in the baby internet days was like 40 or 50 in the late 90's. I just assumed the folks who liked it were nerds who only had it as a touchstone of pop culture kink. I wouldn't think there'd be much reproduction of it, especially since there are bigger cultural touchstones for kink and bdsm. Like I'd imagine 50 shades of grey weirdos would have fully replaced gor ones among younger people.

My first job was in a lovely contact center. One of the weirdos I worked with (among many who've become life-long friends) was completely obsessed with Gor. He'd tell me all about how awesome it was while we were on break and I just hmm'd and nodded because I didn't know what else to do. He did this over and over again, telling me stories about some... MUD? IRC game? I don't remember but drat.

He was a pretty pathetic dude, and it just made me never want to even consider checking it out.

The inherent fallacy with arguing that someone has never read Gor and therefore doesn't know anything about it is defeated by the fact that any mention of Gor online (other than here, thankfully) will always summon up some deeply uncomfortable person who will paradoxically try to defend how great the Gor books are by enumerating all the horrific aspects of them. I honestly can't think of another fandom that so readily defends itself by just aggressively putting its worst foot forward at every opportunity.

As for Gor BDSM play, I have no idea if it's common or not (I know a local con used to have a "Gor reenactment party" that was never well attended and went away a few years back) but the one person I've ever known that was really into the sexual aspect of Gor is also in prison now for violent assault/abuse.

The thing about Gor is that it's just a ripoff of Barsoom, with lots of rape. When people talk it up as a work of art...well, I knew someone who said she's not a libertarian, she reads Ayn Rand for her brilliant prose. Sick poo poo.

No, that’s Chris Fields. But Fields also did that “Tournament of Rapists” supplement, so it’d be easy to confuse the two.

At a guess, it’s because the gross stuff is the point to fans of Gor. Outside of its enigma-machine-made-of-rubix-cubes problematic sex stuff, the stories are incredibly bland and generic.

Never forget that significant chunks of Gor are a college professor writing about college women stumbling into another world and being forcefully disabused of the notion that they have rights or autonomy and that they like it better that way in the end raped until they like it. It is spectacularly loving creepy.

Unfortunately I have very detailed suspicions about why people with abusive intentions would latch onto a subculture that has ample members who are interested in BDSM but not knowledgeable about it. It is easy to persuade someone to accept your horrible version of what a top/dom is if they have no idea what an actual functional non-abusive one looks like.

As you probably know, there are plenty of predatory creeps seeking interested-but-ignorant people within the BDSM subculture!

As a matter of fact, Desborough reminds me of a certain type of guy I'm familiar with--they say they're an "100% alpha dom," but what they mean is that they're an extremely vanilla straight guy who doesn't know the difference between porn and sex.

They don't need the exposure and the itch.io cut is as low as you want to set it, instead of the DTRPG cut being 30-35%.

It had an existing fan community because one of the two authors already had a popular webcomic, and a $500k Kickstarter campaign - pretty much everyone who cares about mecha tabletop RPGs has heard about it at some point by now.

DTRPG was until recently a functional monopoly in the pdf sales marketplace. It's taken a concerted effort by indie RPG people to establish a corner of itch as a secondary marketplace and DTRPG is still the dominant force.

Isn't the narrative it's mostly worth it (if you don't have a built-in audience like Lancer, of course) to have your game on both platforms because the number of people who see it on DTRPG evens out the large bite they take?

Kinda pointless based on Lancer's sales model, which is to offer the rules for free, but you support the devs and get the pretty PDF for money. Point them to one store that takes a low cut and is slightly less evil.

I mean, that's the approach I take but it's not the only path to success. Itch is a vastly better platform but it has exactly nil discoverability, so unless you're popular and/or constantly self-promoting to drive sales there your income vanishes to zero very quickly. DTRPG has a lot of built-in ways to put your product in front of people's eyes even before you get into their (broken) publisher promotion system so I still get passive income there from products I released years ago.

But that said plenty of people make more on itch than I do across both platforms together, so it's entirely possible I just suck at monetising that platform.

P.S. Buy my stuff.

To be fair, LANCER doesn't need discoverability to be a high profile indie success now, and I don't think the devs are interested in optimizing profits with hosting on DTRPG. Not to the point of compromising on the fact that DTRPG has done a lot of poo poo in recent years they don't like or want to tacitly endorse, at least.
