Cpt_Obvious posted:All that said, the last article I read about 12 hour work days 6 days a week in the tech industry, Vice had basically a single citation and it was a "tech executives" who was working his butt off so I assume he was getting paid more. It does, but enforcement was pretty lax. In the last 5-6 years it has been tightened up along with generally more benefits including guaranteed pensions. The 996 thing generally seems to have been part of the Tech sector which is more highly paid than other workers. Also, to be honest, a 55 work week in the international tech sector doesn't sound unusual. Also, one could argue that worker rights have historically been hit and miss in a lot of state socialist states (including the Soviet Union), but the usual justification is that it was a necessary sacrifice to build productive forces etc.. The thing about the long hour in the Chinese IT industry is that is pretty common for the big tech companies but not industry wide. You can find IT jobs in regular companies that has pretty normal hours and you are still better paid than your colleagues who has an engineer degree. This is the impression I get from Chinese IT netizens. And the salary hike for the IT sector is a new thing, probably happened in the last 5 years, along with the stock bubble of Pinduoduo and other mobile gaming IT companies. And 5 years ago, I don't remeber complaint of long hours except against the Huawei work culture. People probably dont remember how much of a joke Pinduoduo was just a few years ago. It was basically the Chinese version of Wish. It was the punchline of jokes. stephenthinkpad has issued a correction as of 07:40 on Oct 15, 2021 |

my aunt who worked in a mine as part of her stint in the countryside during the mao era said that they were weirdly strict about the 8 hour workday and once the day was over it was over and they would immediately close everything up. there was a 30 min hiking commute each way from the dorms though bc they didn’t have the roads in good shape yet
