As someone who prefers old school, slow pace wrestling I do not understand how people who claim to also be old school fans don't like Suzuki. He's one of the best storytellers of all time, his match with Okada during Okada's god run was in my opinion the best match of that entire reign solely due to the story they told. Danielson v. Suzuki was a masterpiece that with another 10 minutes would have been my match of the year easily, it still contends though as it is.

I hope the OP got rightfully dragged, but I can understand how a person who hasn't quite figured out how wrestling works coming to that conclusion. Once I figured out that wrestling was a work I stopped caring about what happened in the ring I just wanted the ending and the only way to keep me engaged was flips and cool moves and table spots and suchlike because then at least I was entertained while waiting for the finish. It wasn't until I got older and realized that it was theatre and the finish is meaningless without the story of how we got there that I started to appreciate the slower, more methodical styles. I can imagine this person is in that transitional stage where they don't quite understand what to look for and why.

This isn't actually a bad take and is in fact very good but it really makes things click when you hear it.inconsequential posted:It’s funny you mention this, I was listening to a very pro-WWE podcast (Tights and Fights) that I only checked out because one of the hosts was on Doughboys and actually talked up AEW. So I started listening and quickly learned it was a great Two Minute Hate for me to consume because I disagree with 90% of what they say. This week they were talking about what got them into wrestling/doing a wrestling 101 to explain to new listeners the appeal. And one of the hosts unironically said “It’s like children’s theater. In children’s theater you have these cues of how to react and it’s fun sitting there and doing the reaction”. That really struck me how some WWE fans see themselves not as people allowed and encouraged to react naturally to the product being presented, but as people who have to, like mindless children, react to cues correctly. I know it’s not news, but still a little shocking to hear said by people not on the WWE dole with no irony. It explains a lot about the mindset of the diehards.

I mean, that's not wrong even for other wrestling though? Like no-one in PSP actually hates Kenny Omega, but they'd boo him if they were at an AEW taping because he's the bad guy and that's how you're meant to respond. I think it's possibly easier for UK goons to relate to the pantomime comparison. Like no-one's actually mad at Bradley Walsh off Doctor Who playing the baddie in Dick Whittington, but you do it cuz that's how you're meant to react if you're having fun at the show.

The difference is a good performance doesn't require you to ask yourself how you are "supposed" to react. It evokes those reactions on its own merits rather than by training the audience that they're participating in a call-and-response game. When Khan is putting alien bugs into Chekov's ear in Star Trek 2, I don't have to ask myself "Okay how does the director INTEND for me to respond to this? Am I supposed to cheer or boo Khan?"
