Spain is just kinda hosed up.

Colombus Day is celebrated as "la Fiesta Nacional de España" or National Festival of Spain which is their national holiday. Colombus is seen favorably and the era of Spanish conquests is known as "El Siglo de Oro" or "the Golden Century" or "Century of Gold".

AFAIK no one from the Franco regime ever stood trial for anything and the country only shifted to democracy when Franco's successor got exploded by the Basque ETA.

Catalunia wanted independence and their leaders got locked up. Criticize the king Felipe VI like Pablo Hasél and you'll get sent to prison. Also that scandal with Corrina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein where the royal family threatened to kill her if she revealed her affair with the king. The royal family probably maintains offshore accounts per the Panama Papers (yeah this has nothing to do with racism, more just blatant corruption).

The violence in El Ejido in 2000 against Moroccan immigrants. Vox gaining seats in parliament.

Our history of colonialism is basically never really acknowledged. All the deaths were caused by disease you see, but otherwise Spaniards were chill, race mixed with the natives and brought civilization to them. Have you heard of how violent the Aztecs were? Really, we did them a favor!

This is becoming worse lately with Vox and all but it's been the official narrative all along. There's a lot of hand-wringing about the "Black Legend" of Spain and how it's all lies and we were the one good colonial empire.

Hell I've lived here all my life and I only just learned concentration camps were first invented by Spain, to quell rebellion in Cuba. Never heard anything about that in school or anywhere else, even though the Cuban War of Independence comes up a lot. And I only learned that from an American podcast.

It doesn't help that Spain as a country is an incoherent mishmash of different people groups some of which don't speak Spanish and have been basically forced to be part of the state.

If you get rid of the lionizing narratives of Spanish history what will be left of Spanish identity?

So the government of Ecuador is going to create a department whose sole purpose is to do legal defense exclusively for the police? Well now the rear end-covering for police is being made explicit. The police get to be treated differently by the law.

ooh, yeah, "nega maluca", roughly translates to crazy black woman; that one I haven't heard in a good while and thankfully most bakeries and grocery stores also don't use it anymore either, but it's still in use for sure

Glenn is 200% wrong on this.

Lula is not a firebrand socialists, but he has always been committed to action and big improvements. His alliances have not been aimed at shoring up the status quo but actually letting him pass big stuff (stuff that the conservative governments work hard to destroy even now.)

Direct wealth transfers. Public university expansions. Mass immunizations. Dedicating the revenue of the discovered oil fields toward education and health.

There's a reason the first thing they did after knocking his party out of power was to do a fire sale.

He has tons of flaws, his industrial policy was crap (odd for a former steelworker) and some of his alliances only fed the snakes, but Biden is not worthy of sniffing Lula's jockstrap. Guy ate 560 days of jail over nothing and is back in the game, literally resurrecting a party everyone considered dead and buried.

I don't know if he really CAN do what he intends. Reruns have a poor history in LA. Look at Perón, Vargas, etc. The policial environment that let him do what he did no longer exists. But he has always been good at forging a path somehow. And if he can't, that whiskey-dick pissant Ciro CERTAINLY can't. Dude has no base, has spent his entire career trying to be the heir of a political Daddy: first the military regime (collapsed), then FHC (chose to add re-election to the game instead of picking Ciro as successor), then Lula (knew better), and now is trying to be the Third Way great white hope.

Ciro is literally that rear end in a top hat edgelord with no friends who says that "people don't get me because I'm TOO authentic"

I think you're romanticizing Lula's comeback a bit. He's a politician first and foremost, and one really keen to playing the concessions game to the benefit of the party. Now, that doesn't mean he's a bad politician, he was by far the best we had in...well, probably history, and a lot of his concessions were made in the name of actual good poo poo.

But c'mon, do you really think he's gonna run an aggressive platform when they're looking at Alckmin as a veep option? Dude is gonna play to the Mooca crowd and just remind everyone that poo poo was better under him a la Lulinha Paz e Amor. That's totally fine too because I don't think he gets elected (or takes office) otherwise and at the end of the day electoral politics won't be the thing that saves us anyway.

How is Glenn Greenwald viewed amongst the left in Brazil anyway? A Brazilian I spoke with seemed adamant telling me that he's just an opportunist and his husband makes a living by doing backhand deals with the very people that he claims to fight against. Regularly I'd just laugh it off, but Glenn has definitely been shooting his credibility away from the American Left with his anti-trans anti-vaccine stances.
