it boggles the mind how far right the Overton Window has shifted since Thatcher and Reagan

e: October 1974: the Labour minority government, elected that February, collapses, and on the 10th, the country elects Labour to a one-seat majority government. This result leads directly to Thatcherism

On one hand, if you're going to treat it similarly to racism and homophobia it has to be about more than just physical attacks and screaming slurs and believing the most obvious millennia-old tropes if you're to confront the systemic roots of it.

On the other, if you're going to do that you have to at least be aware of how systemic issues work if you don't want a bunch of fuckwits with frog avatars diluting it beyond meaning on purpose (while also doing all the slurs and millennia-old tropes).

Bit weird that we're still playing a guessing game about this guy's motives so long after his arrest (the Sunday Times is bringing up Amess's links to Qatar, of all things). Can't they just ask him? I feel like 90% of the reasons for murdering a sitting MP are ones that the perpetrator would be happy to chat about if given the chance.

Maybe it's because the motives are too pedestrian? It could have been a crime of passion and that wouldn't go down terribly well in the press.

If anyone suggests in the Guardian that Starmer is anything less than a wonderful return to Sensible Grown-upness, it generates a lot of very angry comments about how the state of the Labour party's entirely Corbyn's fault and Starmer (who has after all been leader for 18 months now) needs to be given a chance to clear up the mess.

I can understand the urge to hold on to the hope that people had that Starmer really did have a chance to turn things around but Christ, the level of cognitive dissonance it must take to scream that Corbyn supporters are the blinkered cultists...

It's been released that it was purely at random, that he had been plotting to kill a Labour or Tory MP for some time and Amess just happened to be the unlucky one.

They're never going to end online anonymity. It's just like the online porn block idea: a sop to idiots who don't understand how the internet works that would be completely implausible and have huge collateral damage (including to people the Tories care about) that they'll spunk millions of pounds on studies and think tanks to work out and then quietly sweep under the carpet when it doesn't.

The thing that people should be worrying about is that unlike the last time this came up the state of the art in carrier-grade filtering has progressed considerably while consolidation of networks means a Great Firewall is actually more technically feasible now than probably at any point since consumer ISPs first started up.

I agree though that we should be watching carefully what their left hand is up to while they're waving Karen's Law around in the right.

The Tory's managed "the last labour government" for 10 years so, I guess that's the benchmark for "someone else's fault."

The reason it's unworkable really isn't technical. Same with the porn block, technically it was impossible, there would be shitloads of ways around the block, and loads of legitimate sites would get blocked too. But the reason it was unworkable was that the Tories also look at porn. And the day everyone goes to load up Pornhub and finds that they have to go call up a real person on the phone to tell them they want to look at titties is they day the Tories lose millions of votes.

Similarly, these fucks also love anonymously abusing people on the internet as much as anyone.
