https://twitter.com/BirdlifeOz/status/1446280891697872896 I backed the Bush Turkey, which came 5th, because there's a family of them in the grounds of our unit block and they're entertaining to watch strut around. Plus they have a nest so there'll be some chicks soon.

I also went with bush turkey after cassowary got eliminated, since I figured that tawny frogmouth was easily going to get enough votes to win. An unwise decision on my part.

RoboRodent posted:I don't know why owls got the reputation for being smart. They all look very "no thoughts, head empty" to me. I'm guessing it's because Athena was traditionally accompanied by an owl and she was the goddess of wisdom. I just looked it up and they don't really know why the association of Athena/owl started though.

She's like one of the earliest goddess's and I assume she might have inspired following myths. Ishtar was sometimes depicted flanked by owls.

Yeah, did Athena get owls because owls were supposed to be smart, or are owls supposed to be smart because of their association with Athena? This is probably getting into the roots of mythology so old nobody even thought of writing it down until hundreds of years later, though. We will likely never know.

Owls are smart because they're philosophical birds. Always asking questions.

I was reading a bit about puffins before a trip to Iceland, we didn't get to see any since it was past their season but I just wanted to share because I saw this cool documentary clip about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIUJfXk3_3w
