Why is someone's ssn in a format that could be extracted from a website? Why is the webmaster not being drawn and quartered for failing to encrypt user form data, especially PII?

The answer is probably the gym teacher is the school's IT staff.

Those in the database that was "hacked" should be suing the state for mismanaging personal information. Surely they'll get free credit monitoring out of this!

The bonus is that the journalist/paper basically did everything right. Poked around to discover the problem, notified the authorities, held the information back before the gaping hole was plugged, then published. And so, the governor calls for a criminal investigation of the paper because enemy of the people.

Thankfully, the paper does not give a gently caress:

In an interview Monday with The Daily Beast, Watkins and science fiction author Tony Teora, his “volunteer campaign coordinator,” struggled to explain why, if Watkins is not involved in QAnon, he’s among the keynote speakers at a QAnon conference called the “Patriot Double Down” in Las Vegas this coming weekend.

“When you say that’s a QAnon convention, I never saw anything posted that it’s a QAnon convention,” Teora said, until a reporter for The Daily Beast pointed out that the conference’s organizers use the aliases “QAnon John” and “Q Queen Amy.”

Further cementing the conference’s QAnon ties, a poster for the event features both “Q” and “17,” an important number for QAnon believers since “Q” is the 17th letter of the alphabet.

“The number 17 is just an auspicious number,” Watkins said.

“Ron, Ron, oh God, oh God!” Teora said.

Sometimes Highway Patrol is also another name for State Police / State Troopers.

All state level police agencies have investigators (detectives) and / or civilian support staff specialists that work on stuff dealing with computers, whether its normal poo poo like going through a murder suspect's hard drive or phone, or heinous poo poo like going through a pedo's hard drive or phone.

Bag on regular cops all you want, but dealing with child abuse crimes is horrendous on people's mental health, and it's good that there are units investigating and prosecuting poo poo like that.

NC has their highway patrol, somehow DMV has (did have?) their own law enforcement and there’s also an NC SBI floating around somewhere. In addition to whatever city, county, or federals are floating around in the area as well.

All just throwing in that cars are computers now. A few years ago I got to speak with a forensics guy from down in Florida who disproved a murder suspect's alabi by accessing their car's computer and showed the car didn't burn nearly enough fuel to get to where the suspect said they drove for the day.

Oh yeah that stuff is fascinating. It's interesting to learn how it's standard procedure for detectives to have honeypot FB accounts so when they're trying to locate a suspect they just send the guy a friend request and try to arrange a meet up. It works a surprising amount of the time without even having to leave their desks.

That poo poo is not great when you see how the sausage is made. The expert gets up in court and spits some technobabble and neither the judge nor the defense know enough to question the first thing about it. Maybe in big cases it's different but some rando murder suspect is hosed at that point.

If you conduct outside research. If you already know something or something doesn't "feel" right then you can do whatever, that would've been on the lawyers or court to strike you beforehand.

Some people are acquitted of crimes because the jurors don't see the magic CSI stuff and figure "oh well that must've came back negative" instead of realizing that many cops don't even take fingerprints unless its a murder.

One of my friends is a defense lawyer who frequently argues at the level of the state supreme court.

A significant portion of their job is getting questionable science, algorithms, proprietary tech, etc thrown out or ay least made available for review by the defense as opposed to hidden for proprietary reasons while a private company paid by prosecutors says “trust us, this data is awesome.” They not infrequently have to find a method or metaphor that is sufficiently technical not to be dismissed as BS but sufficiently folksy to get through to juries.
